Dean Wesley Simons, Jr.
Dean Wesley Simons, Jr., 72, of Martin, died Sunday,
March 26, 2006, at his stepdaughter's home. Burial was in
Woverton Mountain Cemetery in Morrilton, Arkansas.
Mr. Simons was a Truck Driver for Suttles Truck Line
and was a veteran of the United States Marines. He was born
September 21, 1933 in Honesdale, Pennsylvania. He was
preceded in death by his father, Dean Wesley Simons, Sr.;
and his wife, Velma Johnson Simons.
Mr. Simons is survived by two stepsons, Jimmy Sigler of
Jerusalem, Arkansas, and Gary Sigler of Jerusalem, Arkansas;
three stepdaughters, Donna Lewis of Martin, Loretta Miller
of Plumerville, Arkansas, and Pat Smith of Plumerville,
Arkansas; two brothers, Lynn Simons of Homesdale,
Pennsylvania, and Jerry Simons of Waymart, Pennsylvania; and
three sisters, Lois Hiller of Pleasant Mount, Pennsylvania,
Gail Brill of Waymart, Pennsylvania, and B.J. Bussa of
Florida. Donald Gene Markle
Donald Gene Markle, 48, of Austin, Texas, died
Wednesday, March 8, 2006, at his home. Graveside services
for Mr. Markle were held Tuesday, March 28, 2006, at 2:00
p.m. at East Side Cemetery in Martin.
Mr. Markle was a construction laborer. He was born July
18, 1957 in Martin to the late Earl Markle and Mavis
Willford. In addition to his parents, Mr. Markle was also
preceded in death by two brothers, Jerry Markle and Ronnie
Markle.
Mr. Markle is survived by his wife, Mrs. Debra Harrison
Markle of Martin; a son, Steven Markle of Martin; and a
brother, Billy Joe Markle of Martin. Edward M.
Gardner
Edward M. Gardner, 88, of Dresden, died Monday, March
27, 2006, at his home in Detroit, Michigan. Funeral services
for Mr. Gardner were held Saturday, April 1, 2006, at 2:00
p.m. at St. James Church in Dresden. Burial followed in
Sunrise Cemetery in Dresden. Rev. Harold Conner officiated
the services.
Mr. Gardner was a laborer for L&N Railroad for 40 years
and was a member of St. James Church of Everlasting Faith in
Dresden. He was a native of Weakley County and the son of
the late Mammie Armstrong Gardner and Fred Douglas Gardner,
Sr.. In addition to his parents, Mr. Gardner was also
preceded in death by his wife, Lula Mae Ward Gardner; two
sisters, Carline Gardner and Kathrine Gardner; and five
brothers, Eugene "Sonny" Gardner, Frank Gardner, Fred
Gardner, Elbert Gardner, and Hunter Gardner.
Mr. Gardner is survived by a son, Connie L. (Virginia)
Gardner of Detroit, Michigan; a godson, Raymond Turner of
Detroit, Michigan; two grandchildren; and five
great-grandchildren. Elizabeth Osborne Crittendon
Elizabeth Osborne Crittendon, 91, of Martin, died
Saturday, April 1, 2006, at VanAyer Manor Nursing Home in
Martin. Funeral services for Mrs. Crittendon were held
Tuesday, April 4, 2006, at 1:30 p.m. at Murphy Funeral Home
in Martin. Burial followed in Bible Union Cemetery in
Martin. Rev. Terry Griffin officiated the services.
Mrs. Crittendon was retired from Kellwood Manufacturing
Company and was a member of Bible Union Baptist Church. She
was born January 19, 1915 in Fancy Farm, Kentucky to the
late Charlie Osborne and Alice Lattimar Crittendon. In
addition to her parents, Mrs. Crittendon was also preceded
in death by her husband, Luther Crittendon; two sons, Robert
Dale Crittendon and Mike Crittendon; two brothers, Paul
Osborne and Hugh Osborne; and two sisters, Mary Mann and
Kathrine Wright.
Mrs. Crittendon is survived by a son, Ted Crittendon of
Dickson; a daughter, Faye Smith of Martin; a sister, Ludie
Tanner of Townsend, Tennessee; five grandchildren; and
fourteen great-grandchildren. Elsie Lorene Pentecost
Elsie Lorene Pentecost, 90, of Greenfield, died
Thursday, March 30, 2006, at Volunteer Community Hospital in
Martin. Funeral services for Mrs. Pentecost were held
Saturday, April 1, 2006, at Williams Funeral Home in
Greenfield. Burial followed in Old Harmony Cemetery. Roy
Auvenshine officiated the services.
Mrs. Pentecost was a homemaker and attended a Baptist
church. She was born July 11, 1915 in Rutherford to the late
Earnest Leyhue and Velna Davis. In addition to her parents,
Mrs. Pentecost was also preceded in death by her husband,
James Pentecost; and a son, Jerry Wayne Pentecost.
Mrs. Pentecost is survived by a daughter, Kimberly
(Pentecost) Hall of Murray, Kentucky; two sons, Nelson S.
Pentecost of Newport News, Virginia, and Wayman Pentecost of
Munford; three sisters, Florette Marby of Greenfield, Audery
Franklin of Greenfield, and Shirley Sanders of Greenfield; a
brother, Donald Leyhue of Greenfield; seven grandchildren;
and nine great-grandchildren. Larry Yates
Larry Yates, 81, of Sharon, died Sunday, April 2, 2006,
at his home. Funeral services for Mr. Yates will be held
Thursday, April 6, 2006, at 11:00 a.m. at Murphy Funeral
Home in Martin. Burial will follow in East Side Cemetery in
Martin. Mr. T. Joe Walker will officiate the services.
Mr. Yates was a retired lineman/switchman for Bell
South Telephone Company. He was a graduate of Martin High
School and a member of the Church of Christ. Mr. Yates was
also a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and served
in WWII. He was born April 1, 1925 in Weakley County to the
late Leo Yates and Madline Walker Yates. In addition to his
parents, Mr. Yates was also preceded in death by a brother,
Tyler Yates; two sisters, Mary Evelyn (Jackie) Yates and
Naysa Bargh; and a granddaughter, Crystal Yates.
Mr. Yates is survived by his wife, Mrs. Dorothy
McDaniel Yates of Martin; two sons, Larry Leo (Sonny) Yates
of Sharon, and William Tyler (Bill) Yates of Sharon; a
daughter, Marsha Yates of Sharon; two sisters, Shirley Doran
of Nashville, and Annie Lynn Knox of Woodbury, Tennessee;
four grandchildren, Michelle Yates, Stephanie Wilson,
William Tyler Yates, II, and Dorothy Leigh Ricketts; and two
great-grandchildren. Louise McClain Jackson
Louise McClain Jackson, 89, of Martin, died Saturday,
April 1, 2006, at Martin Health Care. Funeral services for
Mrs. Jackson were held Tuesday, April 4, 2006, at 11:00 a.m.
at Murphy Funeral Home in Martin. Burial followed in East
Side Cemetery in Martin. Rev. Larry Kendrick officiated the
services.
Mrs. Jackson was a homemaker and a member of the First
United Methodist Church. She had attended the University of
Tennessee Junior College for 2 years. Mrs. Jackson was born
June 14, 1916 in Weakley County to the late Kelly McClain
and Hattie Levister McClain. In addition to her parents,
Mrs. Jackson was also preceded in death by her husband,
James B. Jackson.
Mrs. Jackson is survived by two sons, Jimmy Jackson of
Martin, and Bill Jackson of Martin; three grandchildren, Amy
Bates, Trina Resser, and Todd Jackson; and five
great-grandchildren. Mattie Lou Eddlemon Wade
Mattie Lou Eddlemon Wade, 75, of Martin, died Tuesday,
March 28, 2006, at her home. Funeral services for Mrs. Wade
were held Friday, March 31, 2006, at 1:00 p.m. at Murphy
Funeral Home in Martin. Burial followed in East Side
Cemetery in Martin. Rev. Virgil Hanks officiated the
services.
Mrs. Wade was a homemaker and a member of New Home
Baptist Church. She was born June 1, 1930. She was preceded
in death by her husband, Burl Dalton Wade.
Mrs. Wade is survived by a son, Charles Wayne Wade of
Union City; two daughters, Donna Jean Johnston of
Greenville, Kentucky, and Joyce Ann Wade of Martin; a
brother, John Paul Eddlemon of Kenton, Kentucky; six
grandchildren, Brandi Blue, Mark Johnston, Penny Long, John
Wade, Angie Kail, and Crissy Landowski; and eleven
great-grandchildren.
Melinda Rhea Garrett
Melinda Rhea Garrett, age 23, of McKenzie died suddenly
at McKenzie Regional Hospital on March 28, 2006. She was
born December 1, 1982 to Dale and Fay Elam Garrett of
McKenzie.
Funeral services were Friday, March 31, 2006, 2:00 p.m.
at First Baptist Church, McKenzie. Brother Clayton Owen and
Brother Dennis Trull delivered the eulogy. Burial was in Mt.
Olivet Cemetery. Brummitt Funeral Home of McKenzie was in
charge of services.
Melinda was a 2001 graduate of McKenzie High School,
where she was an honor student and a member of the
cheerleading squad.
She attended the University of Tennessee at Martin for
four years, where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi
Sorority. While at UTM, she was president of Panhellenic
Council, a member of the homecoming court, and a member of
the Miss UTM royalty. She was also a University Scholar.
She was a first year pharmacy student at the U.T. College of
Health Sciences in Memphis. She was a member of First
Baptist Church, McKenzie.
Survivors include her parents, Dale and Fay Garrett; a
sister, Anna Garrett of Nashville; and a grandmother, Rachel
Elam of Greenfield. She was preceded in death by her
maternal grandfather, Jack Ray Elam Sr. and her paternal
grandparents, Sam and Novella Garrett.
A scholarship fund has been established at UT College
of Pharmacy School in memory of Melinda. Checks may be made

Sharp
Walter D. "Snookie" Sharp, 57, of Greenfield, died
Monday, March 27, 2006, at Jackson Madison County Hospital.
Funeral services for Mr. Sharp were held Thursday, March 30,
2006, at 2:00 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home in Greenfield.
Burial followed in Highland Cemetery in Greenfield. Houston
Patrick officiated the services.
Mr. Sharp was a Rural Mail Carrier for the United
States Postal Service for 36 years. He was born October 17,
1948 in Greenfield to the late Walton Kimery Sharp and
Louise Dunlap.
Mr. Sharp is survived by a son, Richard Sharp; two daughters,
Sandra Coffey of Greenfield, and Lacey Sharp; and three
grandchildren. Wanda Faye Mansfield
Wanda Faye Mansfield, 59, of Dresden, died Tuesday,
March 28, 2006, at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville. Funeral
services for Mrs. Mansfield were held Friday, March 31,
2006, at 2:00 p.m. at Gardner Funeral Home in Sharon. Burial
followed in Woodlawn Cemetery in Sharon. Rev. Jim Barnhouse
officiated the services.
Mrs. Mansfield was a homemaker and a member of the Red
Hat Society. She was born September 26, 1946 in Martin. Mrs.
Mansfield was preceded in death by her father, James Essary;
and two daughters, Stephanie Lynn Swinney and Deanna Swinney
Norris.
Mrs. Mansfield is survived by her husband, Wade
Mansfield on Dresden; her mother, Elise Essary of Sharon;
three daughters, Tracy Mansfield Eddings of Sharon, Jamie
Mansfield Cashion of Dresden, and Denver Mansfield Melton of
Dresden; two sisters, Barbara Chandler of Sharon, and Robbie
Damron of Sevierville, Tennessee; and four grandchildren.
William Robert Thompson
William Robert Thompson, 95, of Sharon, died Sunday,
March 26, 2006, at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin.
Funeral services for Mr. Thompson were held Tuesday, March
28, 2006, at 11:00 a.m. at Gardner Funeral Home in Sharon.
Burial followed in Woodlawn Cemetery in Sharon. Rev. George
Butler officiated the services.
Mr. Thompson was a farmer and veteran of the United
States Army. He was born October 8, 1910 in Sharon.
Mr. Thompson is survived by his daughter, Patricia Elam
of Sharon; a son, Larry Thompson of Memphis; a sister, Mary
Frances Childress of Memphis; a brother, Jeter Thompson of
Sharon; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
