Dresden Industrial Board announces new industries coming to Dresden

By David Fisher

During Friday morning’s meeting at Dresden City Hall, members of the Dresden Industrial Board discussed new industries coming to Dresden and providing more jobs for area citizens. They also approved moving forward with a proposal that would allow a construction company to build a 50,000 sq. ft. spec building at Dresden Industrial Park on its own initiative at no cost to the city.

Greenfield Engineering Building Sold

Dresden Industrial Board Chairman Wendell Alexander stated that the Greenfield Engineering building has been sold to Landco International, which is a subsidiary of Mi-Jack. Alexander and Dresden Mayor Danny Forrester, along with Weakley County Economic Development Director Ronnie Price, traveled to Chicago, Illinois to look at their plant last month and had a very good meeting. Alexander stated that the firm had purchased the Greenfield Engineering property in Greenfield, as well as the property in Dresden. And that there are five companies that have bid on constructing the firm a new plant at Dresden Industrial Park adjacent to the National Guard Armory, near the railroad tracks. “They are a very impressive organization,” Alexander said. “And I think that this could be one of the greatest things we could have industrial wise.” Alexander also stated that the business is expected to provide 75 to 80 jobs when it opens, and could employ as many as 150 to 200 workers within a couple of years.

“If Mi-Jack comes in and wants a new building, what about the financing on it?” asked Commissioner James Westbrook.

Alexander responded by saying that Mi-Jack uses their own bank to finance such projects, so funding the project would not be a problem.

FedEx Building Under Construction

Mayor Forrester also brought the board up to date on the status of the new FedEx building under construction. “FedEx’s overall project manager was here Wednesday along with Setzer Construction, which is building the building for FedEx,” Forrester said. “They are supposed to be hanging metal in two weeks, and be in the building by December 15. They are right on schedule. And that project is moving right along.”

Avon Books Building Sold

Mayor Forrester stated that although he cannot mention any names at the present, “The Avon Book building has been sold. “We’ll be making an announcement here in the next couple of weeks,” Forrester said.

Quebecor Building To Be Sold

“Ronnie Price and myself met Sunday with a gentleman who has signed a letter of intent to purchase the Quebecor building,” Forrester said. He stated that the next step is negotiating a contract, which they hope to have finalized within 90 days. Forrester added that they hope to be employing workers by spring of 2007. He stated that this individual has already made contact with Kentucky-Tennessee Railroad to provide boxcar service that will be needed at the business.

Forrester stated that there has also been another inquiry into purchasing the Quebecor building by another potential buyer. So everything looks like it’s on track for the sale of the building.

Traffic stop leads to drug arrest in Sharon

By David Fisher

A routine traffic stop in Sharon last week resulted in the arrest of a Sharon man on drug and other charges. The traffic stop was initiated as a result of Tennessee’s new “Click It Or Ticket” program, which actively tickets drivers who break the law by failing to buckle their seatbelts.

According to an affidavit of complaint filed by the Sharon Police Department, at approximately 6:39 p.m. on Tuesday, August 29, Lt. Scott Watkins and Sharon Police Chief Brad Hardin observed that the driver of a red Pontiac Sunfire, which was headed west on Hwy. 89, was not wearing a seatbelt. Lt. Watkins states that he pulled the vehicle over because of the seatbelt law violation and learned that the driver was Rodrequies Lamar Thompson of 115 Lewis Taylor Rd., Sharon.

Lt. Watkins states in the report that as he approached the vehicle, he detected a very strong odor of what appeared to be marijuana emitting from the vehicle and also spotted an open container of alcohol sitting in the passenger’s side front seat.

The officer then informed the driver why he was being stopped and asked him for his driver license. After running a computer check of the defendant’s driver license through dispatch, Lt. Watkins learned that the defendant’s driver license had been suspended on December 16, 2004 for failure to pay child support.
