Dresden board hears update on
spec building; passes budget amendments |
During Monday night’s regular monthly
meeting of the Dresden Board of Mayor and Alderpersons, the
board discussed several important items on the agenda,
including: an update on the status of the county’s spec
building, police patrol car bids, Dresden Civic Center
renovation bids, a Meth Task Force Program resolution,
assorted budget amendments, city department reports,
problems with garbage pickups, sewer improvements funding
options, and an update from the Weakley County Chamber of
Commerce.
Spec Building Update
Alderman Mike Forchione gave an update on the status of
the spec building, saying, “We’re continuing to move at
glacial speed” in making the spec building a reality. Martin
is supposed to be buying the property, but we don’t know
exactly when they’re going to be presenting it to the County
Industrial Board.” He stated that under the amended
agreement, Martin has the option of “vetoing the sale or
lease of the building if they don’t feel like they’re
getting enough money back, which is not the same offer that
the City of Dresden made initially. Our offer was to donate
the land and have the site ready for a building. It goes
back again to weakness of leadership in the courthouse . . .
eventually, the City of Dresden will be asked to amend the
interlocal agreement concerning payments. From what I read
of it, I don’t really see where the cities can really vote
to amend the percentages, which are set by state law. The
state law would have to be changed rather than the cities
voting to change their financing methods. So, we’re moving
forward, but we don’t have a start time for the building.
They’re reviewing the site. The engineers and architects are
going back to try to refigure the cost to get a solid quote.
So, that’s where we are right now.

School board gives final
approval for new grading policy |
During Thursday night’s meeting of the
Weakley County School Board held at Martin Primary School,
school board members unanimously approved the second and
final reading of a new grading policy mandated by the
Tennessee State Legislature, which creates a uniform
statewide grading scale for letter grades. The board also
approved budget resolution and transfers, and gave final
approval for the 2006-2007 school calendar.
Grading Policy
The new grading policy, which is retroactive to the
ninth grade, ensures that Weakley County students will have
an equal chance to receive scholarship money. Under the old
policy, it was more difficult for students attending school
systems with stricter grading scales to compete for scarce
scholarship dollars, because students with equal abilities
attending schools with less restrictive grading scales could
earn higher letter grades for the same amount of effort. The
new statewide grading policy provides all Tennessee students
with a more level playing field when it comes to earning
scholarships.
The revision in the grading scale only applies to
grades 6-12, not to grades K-5.

Rural mobile home destroyed in
blaze |
A rural mobile home located northeast of
Palmersville was destroyed in a Thursday afternoon fire.
There was no one home when the fire erupted, but a local
resident noticed that the mobile home was on fire and called
it in to 911.
According to Palmersville firefighter David Winstead,
the fire call came in around 12:10 p.m. and when members of
the Palmersville Fire Department arrived, the structure,
owned by Don Johnson of 9717 Boydsville Road, was already
fully involved with flames lapping out the top of the wall,
as well as the doors and windows. The mobile home is located
on Boydsville Road approximately three miles east of the
intersection of Hwy. 89.
