Two-car collision results in fatality
By David Fisher

A Weakley County woman lost her life as the result of injuries sustained in a two-vehicle accident Thursday morning, which took place approximately one mile north of Gleason.
According to a Tennessee Highway Patrol report, at approximately 8 a.m. Beverly Ann Hampton, 41, of Sharon, was reportedly traveling south on the Highway 22 four-lane between Gleason and Dresden in her 1989 Buick Century, when her car was rear-ended by a 1999 Mitsubisi Montero sport utility vehicle driven by Sarah W. Forrester, 25, of Dresden.
Hampton was airlifted to Jackson-Madison County General Hospital by Air Evac Lifeteam, but died Friday from injuries sustained in the crash.
Forrester was transported by Weakley County Ambulance to Volunteer General Hospital in Martin for treatment and medical evaluation. Family members say that she is physically healing, but remains emotionally shaken by the fatal crash.
Although the accident report is incomplete at this time, it is possible that the crash may have been weather related, due to heavy rains that moved through the area that morning.
Both drivers were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
Southbound lanes were blocked for some time during the emergency to allow for transportation of the injured drivers and removal of the vehicles and other scattered debris.
Other emergency agencies assisting in helping to work the accident included: Weakley County Sheriff's deputies, Gleason Police Chief Edmond Stewart, members of the Dresden Fire Department, and several first responders.

Gleason board increases water, sewer and garbage deposit
By David Fisher

One of the top items for discussion during Thursday night's regular monthly meeting of the Gleason Board of Mayor and Aldermen was a proposed change in the city's charter to allow for an increase in the city's water and sewer deposit and to add garbage pickup to those services covered by the new deposit rate.
Water, Sewer & Garbage Deposit
Mayor Jack Dunning explained that the city is currently short about $1,200 in uncollectable water and sewer bills from people who have moved in and out of the area. He also noted that the current fee is insufficient and state regulations require the city's water and sewer budget must stand on its own, without help from other city funds. With this in mind, Mayor Dunning stated that a representative from Municipal Technical Advisory Service has recommended the city increase its water and sewer deposit fee from $50 to $80.
He added that the increase would not affect current city residents even if they move within the city limits, but it will affect those who are moving into the city. He stated that the deposit would cover the water, sewer and garbage services.
After careful consideration, the board unanimously approved the ordinance. Because it is a charter amendment, the measure must be approved by the city board in two successive meetings before taking effect.

Region impacted by severe weather; little damage locally
By David Fisher

Over the past several days, unseasonably warm temperatures spawned thunderstorms and tornadoes across several states, resulting in weather-related deaths, injuries and extensive damage to property.
Weakley County Storms
Although Weakley County was one of several Northwest Tennessee counties that experienced high winds, lightning and heavy downpours caused by a series of thunderstorms during the past week, there have been no reports of loss of life or widespread property damage, as in other nearby states. There was, however, some minor wind damage and power outages reported.
The Weakley County Municipal Electric System reports that power was lost in Martin and Palmersville Thursday night, when high winds clocked at approximately 53 m.p.h. downed tree limbs, which knocked down power lines. Power was lost around 7 p.m. in Martin, but was restored around 10 p.m., while power in Palmersville was out from about 10 p.m. Thursday until 1 a.m. Friday.
Weakley County Emergency Management Director Mark Seat said that Landom Woods Subdivision in Martin was hit by Thursday night's storm, resulting in downed trees and power lines, and there was also a 16-foot trailer overturned by the high winds.
