Relay For
Life Week proclaimed in Weakley County |
Weakley County Relay For Life organizers gathered at the
Weakley County Courthouse in Dresden recently for the
signing of a proclamation setting aside June 9 - June 16 as
American Cancer Society Relay For Life Week in Weakley
County.
The proclamation notes that, according to statistics,
cancer will touch one out of every two men and one out of
every three women during their lifetime.
This year alone, 564,830 Americans are expected to die
of cancer - more than 1,500 people a day.
Nationwide, over 1.3 million people will be diagnosed
with cancer this year. An estimated 32,140 will be diagnosed
in Tennessee.
The American Cancer Society is the nationwide,
community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to
eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing
cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer,
through research, education, advocacy and service.
Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society's
signature activity raising awareness and funds for the fight
against cancer.
On June 9th and 10th, and June 16th and 17th, teams of
Weakley West (Martin and Sharon) and Weakley South (Dresden,
Gleason and Greenfield) communities will take turns walking
or running around a track for 12 hours during this unique
fund-raising event to symbolize that cancer never sleeps
and, therefore, we cannot stop fighting.
By signing the proclamation, Weakley County Mayor Ron
Gifford urges all community members to support the
fund-raising efforts of local Relay For Life teams, to join
cancer survivors in the celebration of life, and dedicate
themselves to the fight against cancer, by attending Relay
For Life events in their neighborhoods.

Martin man
arrested on DUI charges following single vehicle accident |
Martin police
arrested a Martin man over the weekend, after the man
allegedly drove away from the scene of a single-vehicle
accident.
According to Captain Scott Robbins of the Martin Police
Department, officers were dispatched to a single-vehicle
crash, which took place on Fonville Street at approximately
5:36 a.m. Sunday. When officers arrived at the scene, the
vehicle had left the area.
A witness told Patrolman Eric Reed that the vehicle
that crashed was a black Jeep Grand Cherokee. The witness
stated that the vehicle had rolled over and landed back on
all four tires, then the driver drove away. Martin officers
checked the immediate area and found the damaged vehicle
parked at 103 Parrish Street, two blocks from the accident.
Patrolman Reed reported that when the driver,
32-year-old Michael James Hester of 103 Parrish Street in
Martin, was then located, it was discovered that Hester had
injuries to his head and arms and had a strong smell of an
intoxicating beverage about his person.
Emergency Medical Personnel were called to the scene
and they transported the defendant to Volunteer Community
Hospital where he was treated for his injuries and later
released.
