High winds down lights at Dresden ballpark

By David Fisher

A string of thunderstorms Friday night caused minor damage in sections of Tennessee and Kentucky, leaving several areas without electrical power as the high winds toppled trees, tree limbs and some power lines.

Weakley County Municipal Electric System Director Faron Collins said, “We had some scattered damage all over the system – from down around Bradford to South Fulton and over into the east part of Weakley County.”

Collins stated that the storms, which came through Weakley County around 8 p.m., didn’t cause any major damage. But said, “We had enough isolated damage scattered around that it took us four or five hours before we could get the electricity back on at some residences. It was nothing major, just widespread.”

Collins added that there were about four crews working to repair damage to the county’s electrical system in the wake of the high winds.

In Dresden, the storm downed a light pole at Wilson Park that had illuminated the large ball field, and destroyed an array of high-powered lights mounted on the pole when it crashed to the ground.

Dresden Mayor Danny Forrester stated that the light pole that fell was the one behind the dugout on the first-base side of the high school ballfield. He added that a section of fence crushed by the falling pole would also have to be repaired. Forrester stated that Weakley County Municipal Electric System was scheduled to begin repair work Monday.
