Arson
investigation follows Latham blaze |
By David Fisher
Staff Reporter
An arson
investigation was initiated following a fire near Latham on
Monday.
According to Latham Fire Chief
Ronald Legans, a fire call came in at approximately 10:17 a.m.,
reporting a blaze at 7633 Highway 118, Latham, which is owned by
John Cavendar of Saint Louis, Missouri.
“It was pretty much fully
involved when we got there,” said Chief Legans. He added that
Latham firefighters utilized all four trucks from the Latham
Fire Department in extinguishing the blaze.
Chief Legans explained that the
blaze included three vacant buildings - a barn, a small house
beside it, and a large house. He stated that the barn was a
total loss, but the small and the larger houses were saved with
minimal damage.
“The house smothered itself out,
but the little house was on fire when I got there,” Chief Legans
said. “So I had to put it out and I had my other resources on
the barn to keep it from spreading. We put a line around the
barn to keep it from going anywhere.” He added that it was
raining heavily at the time, which helped prevent the fires from
spreading, and stated that the blaze was extinguished by 12:43
p.m.
