The Dresden Middle School Lions have a number of streaks going after their first three games of the 2005 season. The Lions added to the most important streak on Thursday night, defeating Trenton 26-0 to move to 3-0 on the season.

The Lions actually added to another streak early in the first frame as they fumbled on their first possession of the game for the third straight week.

Despite the fumble, the Lion defense stepped up and stopped the Bears, forcing a turnover on downs.

Beginning at their own 26-yard line, the Lions began to drive the ball down the field. The Lions amassed a 14-play, 74-yard drive that took up the final six minutes of the first frame and the opening seconds of the second. Zac Jolley capped the drive with a three-yard scoring run. Chris Workman added the two-pointer to make the score 8-0 with 7:47 left in the game.

After three plays from the Bears, the Lions were on the offensive again. This time it took eight plays and 50 yards before a 10-yard run from Jolley put the Lions back on the board. The two-pointer was added by Tyler King to make the score 16-0 at the half.

The Lions also got on the board in their first possession of the second half as two 10-yard runs and another 13-yard gain by Jolley set up a three-yard run by Dale Hutcherson for DMS’ third touchdown of the game. Hutcherson then found an open Kody Houston for the two-pointer to make the score 24-0 with 2:28 left in the third frame.

Dresden’s second team played much of the final frame and the DMS defense added a safety at the buzzer for good measure to secure the 26-0 win.

Dresden will travel to Greenfield on Thursday night for the opening of county play.

Greenfield JH Yellowjackets 34 - Henry Pirates 8

The Greenfield Jr. High Yellowjackets moved their record to 2-1 on the season as they sank the visiting Henry Pirates 34-8 Thursday night at home.

In the opening quarter the ‘Jackets struck quickly. After receiving the kickoff the ’Jackets marched into Pirate territory with runs from Tyler Dunning. A 23-yard run set up a 35-yard catch & run from Ty Smithson to Andrew Kelley. With the two-point conversion, the Yellowjackets were up 8-0 with 6:46 remaining in the first quarter.

The Pirates attempted to respond to the score. Keeping the ball on the ground, the Pirates marched into Yellowjacket territory. But, on fourth down and three, Pirate running back Montevaius Finch coughed up the ball and Greenfield recovered the loose ball.

The Yellowjackets began the drive from their own 30-yard line. Tyler Dunning ripped off runs of 22 and 32 yards to set up first and 10 on the Pirate 16-yard line. The next play Jess Castlemen rumbled into the end zone. The conversion attempted failed but the ‘Jackets were in control 14-0 with 1:57 remaining in the first quarter.

Again the Pirates drove into Greenfield territory with huge gains of 34 and 22 yards from Montevaius Finch. Threatening to score, the drive was halted with an interception of Daniel Cendejas’ pass by Ty Smithson at the Greenfield 5-yard line. Ty returned the interception to the Greenfield 48-yard line.

Steven Sawyers number was called and he advanced the line of scrimmage to the Pirate 27-yard line. A holding penalty and a play for one negative yard placed the line of scrimmage at the 33-yard line. On third and 17, Ty Smithson found Andrew Kelley on a crossing pattern and scored again. With the two-point conversion, the ‘Jackets dominated 22-0.

With time running out of the first half the Pirates offense struggled and opted to convert on fourth down and 13 from their own 32-yard line. The Greenfield defense stiffened and didn’t allow the conversion. With seconds winding down, Steven Sawyers saw an opening in the middle and raced for a 39-yard score. The half ended with Greenfield in command 28-0.

The Greenfield coaching staff elected to play their younger players in the second half and late in the third quarter after a Pirate fumble, Yellowjacket Brady Medling rumbled 36-yards for Greenfield’s last score. The conversion attempt failed and Greenfield was ahead 34-0.

Midway in the final quarter the Pirates mounted a drive with Montevaius Finch running the ball and netting three first downs marched the ball to a first and Goal at the Greenfield 9-yard line. One play later, Montevaius Finch capped the drive with a score. With the two-point conversion the game would end at 34-8.

Dresden rallies to beat Humboldt in thriller

Dresden’s Lions overcame a 21-0 first half lead by Humboldt Friday night to win their first Region game of the 2005 season, 42-34.

Humboldt took the opening kick-off of the contest and began their first offensive set from their own 24 yard line. Thirteen plays later, Viking running back Marcus Reynolds scored the first TD of the game on a two-yard run to cap off the 76-yard drive. Humboldt’s Chris Koon kicked the extra point to give the Viking a 7-0 edge with 6:10 remaining in the first quarter.

Dresden began their first offensive series of the game following the Humboldt kick-off at their own 30-yard line. The Lions were able to gain only five yards before being forced to punt on fourth down. The Dresden punt was downed at the Humboldt 31 yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, Viking running back Adrian Donald busted through the Dresden defense and scampered 69 yards for the second Humboldt TD of the game. Koon’s PAT kick was good to give the Vikings a 14-0 advantage with 4:22 remaining in the first quarter of play.

The Lions began their second offensive series of the game following the kick-off at their own 35-yard line. From there the Lions drove the ball down field before being faced with a fourth and 13 situation at the Viking 27 yard line. Dresden place kicker Ryan Nanney was called upon to attempt a 43 yard field goal from there. Nanney’s kick was straight enough but fell about two feet short of clearing the uprights on the attempt. Following the field goal attempt, Humboldt took over at their own 20 yard line and three plays later, Donald again broke loose on a 80 yard run to score the third unanswered TD for the Vikings of the game. Koon’s Pat kick was good to give Humboldt a 21-0 lead with 20:54 remaining in the second quarter.

Gleason tops South Fulton to remain unbeaten

By J. R. Peevyhouse

The Gleason Bulldogs continued their winning ways on Friday night, eclipsing their win total from the entire 2004 season as they defeated the South Fulton Red Devils 22-8 to move to 3-0 on the season (1-0 in Region 7-1A).

It did not take long for the Bulldogs to get on the board. After forcing the Red Devils to punt, the snap on the ensuing kick sailed over the head of the punter, causing a 14-yard loss and giving the Bulldogs possession at the South Fulton 8-yard line.

From there, it took only one play for the Dawgs to find the end zone as T.J. Wilson broke free for an eight-yard touchdown run. Wilson also picked up the two-point conversion to make the score 8-0 with 9:39 left to play in the first frame.

Neither team could get much going through the remainder of the first quarter as both defenses stepped up to keep the opposing offense in check.

South Fulton threatened at the start of the second quarter. After the Bulldog defense stopped running back Shane Vinson for a loss, the senior South Fulton ball carrier broke free for a 42-yard gain down to the Gleason 29-yard line. After losing three yards on two plays, the Red Devils called Vinson’s number again as he picked up a 15-yard gain to the Gleason 17-yard line. However, the Gleason defense and three penalties shut down the drive and stranded the Red Devils at the Gleason 30-yard line.

After a penalty to open the drive, a six-yard gain from Zach Wallace put the Dawgs at their own 27-yard line. Then, Gleason picked up back-to-back first downs as a 20-yard pass from Adam Bennett to Jacob Howington garnered the first one and a 15-yard run by Wilson got the second one. After a short loss, Wulson carried the ball on three straight plays as he picked up 29 yards and two first downs, taking the Bulldogs to the South Fulton 10-yard line. After a short Wallace run and a five-yard penalty, Bennett found an open Byron Fuqua to complete a 12-yard scoring strike. Wilson added the two-point conversion to make the score 16-0 with 29 seconds left in the first frame.
