Dresden falls to USJ Bruins in sub-state action

By J. R. Peevyhouse

Dresden's road through the playoffs after the first round of the regional tournament began to look more and more like it did in the 2004 season. After a loss in the regional title game to Halls on Wednesday, the Lions traveled to USJ for the second straight year for sub-state action. This time, however, the Lions proved they weren't the same team that the Bruins had defeated in five innings a year earlier. Dresden kept pace with the Bruins through the first four and a half innings before a four run fifth inning propelled USJ to the 9-3 victory on Friday afternoon in Jackson.
Dresden was able to get three runners on in the top of the first inning as a double by Matt Thomas and a single from Adam Clements were followed by a walk to Jerry Gallimore to load the bases with one out. But a strikeout and a fielder's choice ended the first-inning threat.
USJ, however, was able to get on the board in their half of the first inning as an RBI single from Clayton Gant plated Josh Lyles. Two batters later, Ryan Petty singled in two runs to push the USJ lead to 3-0 after one inning.
Dresden answered back in the top half of the second inning as Thomas got his second hit of the game, singling in Adam Turbeville (who was hit by a pitch) to make the score 3-1.
After holding the Bruins in check in the bottom of the second, the Lions were able to get some more offense going in the top of the third inning. After Derrick Hansen reached on an error and Wil Levister got a single, Jacob Hatchel singled in both runners to make the score 3-3 after the Lions half of the third inning.
Though Dresden was able to hold the Bruins to three batters in the bottom of the third, the Lions would strand runners at first and third in the top of the fourth inning as well.
USJ's offense finally answered back in the bottom of the fourth inning as an Andrew Long homerun gave the lead back to the Bruins. Two batters later, William Wallace reached on an error to plate Hunter Garrett, who had singled after Long's homer, to make the score 5-3 after four innings.
USJ put the game away in the bottom of the fifth inning. Aided by a pair of errors, the Bruins scored four runs in the inning. Ryan Petty plated one run when he reached on an error. Long then got an RBI double and, in turn, scored on a two-run Garrett single to make the score 9-3 in favor of the Bruins.
Dresden was able to load the bases again in the top of the sixth inning, getting singles from Ryan Smith, Thomas and Clements. But, the Bruins were able to get out of the inning with a strikeout and a ground out.
The Bruins only allowed a Jacob Hatchel single in the top of the seventh inning to seal the win for USJ and send the Bruins to the Spring Fling.

Halls tops Lions for Region 8-A baseball title

For the second straight year, Dresden's roadblock to hosting a sub-state game became the Halls Tigers. And, for the second straight year, Halls' Josh Daniels provided the pop the Tigers would need to as his first inning homerun propelled the Tigers to a 3-0 victory in the Region 8-A Championship game on Wednesday afternoon at Dresden.
The Tigers got all the runs they would need in the top of the first inning as Daniels put the second pitch of the ball game over the left-centerfield wall to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. After a groundout, the Tigers sent two more long flyballs out into centerfield, but those were caught by centerfielder John Gallimore.
Dresden was able to get a pair of runners on in the bottom of the first as a walk to Matt Thomas and a single by Jerry Gallimore gave the Lions two runners on with two outs. But, a fielder's choice snuffed the inning and preserved the one-run lead for the Tigers.
After a 1-2-3-inning by the Tigers in the top half of the second inning, the Lions got a good start in their half of the second with a leadoff single by Wil Levister. But, three straight groundouts would strand Levister at second base.
