Peabody in semis |
By J. R. Peevyhouse

The Gleason Lady Bulldogs might have been somewhat
outsized on Saturday night, but the orange and black girls
put out a strong second half effort before falling to the
Peabody Lady Tide 64-58 in the semifinals of the Region 8-A
Tournament held at Gleason.
Trailing by 11 points at the end of the first half, the Lady
Bulldogs rallied to start the third frame, getting a jumper
from Riley Auvenshine and a pair of free throws from Meagan
Price to cut the Peabody lead to seven points. Though the
Lady Bulldogs were able to match the Lady Tide
point-for-point for the next couple of minutes,
three-pointers from Jennifer Simpson and Janet Orgain
countered a Price layup and pushed the Lady Tide lead back
to 10 points. A late Kayla Hudson jumper made the score
46-38 at the end of the third stanza.

South Fulton stuns Dresden in
region semis |

For the second time this season, the Devilettes played
spoiler to a Weakley County team as the South Fulton girls
used a strong second quarter performance to propel
themselves past the District 15-A champion Dresden Lady
Lions 52-36 in the semifinals of the Region 8-A Tournament
at Gleason on Saturday night.
Dresden started the game off strong. After an early Brandi
Alexander bucket, Dresden responded with a three-pointer
from Brooke Levister, followed by two layups from Emily
Rook. Katie Quinton capped the 10-0 run moments later with a
trey that made the score 10-2 with 3:20 left in the frame.
South Fulton cut the lead to 10-5 points late in the frame
with a three-pointer from Molly Ledbetter.
Ledbetter sank another trey at the start of the second frame
to cut the Dresden lead to two points. After a pair of free
throws from Quinton, the Devilettes dominated the remainder
of the first half. Both Kaci Beadles and Shelby Cawthon
contributed four points each to the quarter-ending run that
also saw Alexander sink a trey to help South Fulton take a
19-12 lead at the end of the first half.
After a Cawthon three-point play was answered by a Quinton
free throw, Quinton nailed a three-pointer to offset a
Cawthon deuce and cut the South Fulton lead to eight points
with 5:16 left in the third frame. After an Alexander trey
pushed the lead back to double digits, a pair of Levister
jumpers trimmed the lead to seven points. After a pair of
Alexander free throws, an Ashlee Dubruiel jumper and a
Bailey free throw made the score 29-23 at the end of three
frames.
South Fulton jumped on the Lady Lions early in the final
frame, opening the final eight minutes with a 9-0 run with
seven points coming from Brooke Harris that put the
Devilettes up by 15 points with 6:31 left in the game. A
Rook trey and a Quinton three-point play cut the lead to
nine points, but the Devilettes outscored the Lady Lions
14-7 down the stretch to seal the win and eliminate the
Dresden girls.
Quinton led Dresden with 12 points, while Levister added
nine. Harris led the way for South Fulton with 13 points
while Alexander added 11. Cawthon and Ledbetter each added
10 in the win.

Peabody ends Greenfield season |
By J. R. Peevyhouse

The Peabody Golden Tide, playing without senior standout
and UT-Chattanooga signee Niccheaus Doaks, ended the
Greenfield Yellowjackets hopes of a third straight trip to
the TSSAA State Tournament on Thursday night as the Tide
handed Greenfield a 60-56 setback in the first round of the
Region 8-A Tournament in Gleason.
Greenfield took the lead early in the game as a pair of
layups from Brett Reynolds and a jumper from Brandon Shane
countered a Destrick Fields layup to make the score 6-2 with
6:23 left in the opening frame. But, Peabody answered back
with an 8-2 run over their own with four different players
netting buckets to counter a Shane layup. A Shane deuce
briefly tied the game, but Greg Ramsey answered with a layup
of his own. After a Jeremy Smith jumper tied the game late
in the frame, a free throw with 25 seconds left in the frame
from Raphael Miller gave Peabody a 13-12 lead at the end of
the opening frame.
