Lions defeat Tornadoes to remain undefeated

By Rory Higgins
Sports Writer

Undefeated 4-0 and wearing brand new uniforms, the Dresden boys took to their home field against the Union City Tornadoes on Monday afternoon and took yet another win.
With Adam Clements pitching, Union City's first two batters went out on strikeouts. But third up, Hunter Lindsey hit a single to make it on first and then on to second on a wild pitch with the next batter.
That next batter, Blake Gregg, knocked out a double way out to right field to bring home Lindsey for the first point of the game. However, Union City's offense was cut short in the opening inning after Clements served up a strikeout with the following batter.
For the next few innings, both teams remained scoreless and were barely making it on base with a number of strikeouts and ground outs to first coming from both teams.
In the bottom of the fourth, the black and gold earned some points that would later give them the win. After Derek Hansen drew a walk, a double deep between right and center field from Matt Thomas put runners on second and third.
After this, Adam Clements hit a single to left field to bring Hansen home, with Brett Turner running for Clements. A ground out to first with the next batter brought Thomas home, followed by a double from Wil Levister to bring Clements home after another ground out between the two scores.
The fourth inning ended for Dresden after Levister attempted to make it to third on a wild pitch and was caught out at third.
Dresden added another point to their score board the next inning after Hansen brought Drew Vernon home on a single, making the score 4-1.
With two innings left, the purple and gold attempted to make the best of their last two opportunities at bat but fell short by a point by the end.
Kyle Hitt was able to make it to first base after a dropped third strike in the sixth inning, and then went onto make it to second on a wild pitch and steal both third and home plate to make the score 4-2.
In the top of the seventh, Gregg brought a runner home after a couple outs to make the score 4-3 with runners on second and third. Close to tying it up, the next hitter's shot was caught by Clements at the pitcher mound and thrown to Jacob Hatchel for a ground out to end the game.

Lady War Eagle offense too much for Gleason
By J. R. Peevyhouse

The Gleason Lady Bulldog softball team showed improvement on Thursday afternoon, playing sound defense during their contest with West Carroll. However, the Lady War Eagle offense proved to be too much as the Lady Dawgs fell 14-5 to West Carroll.
After West Carroll opened the game with a run in both the first and second innings, the Lady Bulldogs were able to get on the board in the bottom of the second as Amy Spain was able to steal home to cut the Lady War Eagle lead to 2-1.
However, that score did not last long as the Lady War Eagles scored three runs in the top of the third inning to push their lead to four points.

Dresden tops Westview in Charger season-opener

By Rory Higgins
Sports Writer

In Martin Westview's season opener on a cold, cloudy
last Tuesday, they traveled to Dresden to play against
the Lions, who had kicked their season off with a 5-4
victory the previous day against the visiting Peabody
Golden Tide.
Starting off the first inning, both teams were three
up and three down as Matt Thomas threw a couple
strikeouts and Westview's Brandon Pate and Matt
Fortner were more than happy to catch a couple pop
flies from Dresden batters.
After both teams seemed to warm up after that
scoreless opening inning, Westview's Brody Legens hit
a line drive out to right field that brought two
runners home in the top of the second.
With the bases loaded moments later, a hit caught by
Thomas and tossed to catcher Adam Turbeville at home
plate netted the third out and sent the Westview
offense back to the dugout.
