Skyhawk baseball signs
third baseman from SBU |
Nathaniel Walters saw his dream come true this week when
he signed scholarship papers to play baseball at the
University of Tennessee at Martin.
"It has always been a dream to sign a national letter of
intent to play college baseball," Walters said.
Walters was on campus recently and met with head coach Bubba
Cates and other staff and administrators.
"After meeting with Coach Cates and all the people on
campus, I have nothing but good things to say about UT
Martin."
Walters will transfer to UT Martin from St. Bonaventure
University in New York, where he was redshirted this past
season. Walters is a corner infielder and he should
add some power to the Skyhawks' lineup.
He prepped at Cactus Shadows High School in Cave Creek,
Arizona.
Entering his senior year of high school, Walters was ranked
the 56th best third baseman in the nation by Team One
Baseball. He had a .400 career batting average and was
a three-time winner of the Dr. Voje Stuart Chase Coy
Student-Athlete Award.
"Fans will see that I always give 110 percent when I play,"
Walters said.
Walters said he is familiar with the Ohio Valley Conference
and the level of baseball that is played.
"I grew up in Decatur, Illinois, not far from Eastern
Illinois University and I have a cousin that pitches for
Easter Kentucky University."
Cates said he thinks Walters can come in and make an impact.
"As we dug in and tried to find out information about Nate,
we found out he was a quality player," Cates said. "He
has a high profile background and he is a quality hitter.
"We want him to hit in the middle of our lineup and drive in
runs," Cates said.
"We need offensive help and that's our primary attraction to
him. Nate is a quality student and a fine young man."
Walters helped lead the Cactus Shadows Falcons to their
first-ever Elite Eight.
He was named to three consecutive all-region teams and
helped the Falcons claim three first-place finishes in the
region.

Wildlife Commission sets
2005-2006 hunting season |
|
The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Commission (TWRC) set the
hunting seasons for 2005-2006 at its May meeting held in
Nashville on May 19, 2005.
Major changes for the 2005-2006 are as follows:
Crossbows are now legal to use during the deer archery
season.
Expanded the definition of a youth hunter. Youth hunters are
now defined as young sportsmen 6 -16 years of age for both
statewide and Wildlife Management Area (WMA) youth only
hunts. Youths still must be accompanied by a non-hunting
adult, 21 years of age or older, who must remain in a
position to take immediate control of the hunting device.
The bag limit for the 2006 Spring Wild Turkey Season was
increased by one bird to 4 bearded birds per season, only
two of which may come from a WMA.

Barnes named assistant athletics director development at
UT-Martin |
|
Former Tennessee-Martin football player and Hall of
Fame member Randy Barnes has been named assistant athletics
director for development at his alma mater.
"It's a great opportunity, and I believe I can make a
difference in this role, Barnes said. "I've always been a
good alumnus for UT Martin, and I'm hopeful that I can use
my experience as a high school coach and the contacts I made
during that time to help support and better all the athletic
programs at the university."
Barnes, a longtime high school football coach at Union City
High School, begins his new duties June 1.
"I am very pleased Chancellor (Nick) Dunagan has approved
the appointment of Randy Barnes as assistant athletics
