Five Skyhawks named to
preseason All-Conference Team |
For the first time in school
history, the University of Tennessee at Martin football team
has landed five players in the All-Ohio Valley Conference
Pre-Season Team.
Among those named to the team
were Taurean Stephens, a wide receiver from Cincinnati,
Ohio; sophomore tailback Donald Chapman from Marietta,
Georgia; senior defensive back Jason Coleman from Fairburn,
Georgia; senior defensive end and team captain Andre
Plummer; and junior linebacker Markeseo Jackson from
Memphis, Tennessee.
"It is a great honor to have
five players named to this preseason team," said Matt
Griffin, the Skyhawks' third-yea head coach. "All five
are outstanding young men with great character."
Griffin said while it is nice to
have five players on the preseason all-conference team, he
would rather see all five on the team at the end of the
season.
"If that happens, then we have accomplished
something," Griffin said.
The Skyhawks return 21 starters,
including 10 on the offensive side of the ball, nine on
defense and two specialists.
Chapman is among the OVC's top
returning rushers this season. He piled up 1,084 yards
on 246 attempts last year.
Stephens is among the league's
top returning receivers. A year ago he had 67 catches
for 732 yards.
Jackson is the OVC's top
returning tackler. He had 116 total tackles last year
and 74 solo tackles. Jackson is also among the
league's top returners for quarterback sacks, while Coleman
is among the top returners for interceptions.
Tennessee-Martin kicks off the
season September 1, when it hosts Central Arkansas at Hardy
M. Graham Stadium.
Kick-off is set for 6:30 p.m.
Season tickets are on sale now.
