TNT Title |
By J. R. Peevyhouse

Though it took the Dresden Middle School Lions four trips
to the semifinals to advance to the TNT State Title game,
the Lions made sure that their first trip to the final game
of the tournament in Class AAAA as they defeated the Caywood
Minutemen 35-30 to take the school's first ever boys TNT
title on Saturday night at Springfield.
Dresden started the game off strong as, after a Matthew
McCuller jumper was countered by a layup from Caywood's
Nicolas Kizer, the Lions got a pair of free throws from
Justin Coleman, then back-to-back buckets from Hunter
Robinson and Zack Terry to give the DMS boys an 8-2 lead
with 1:49 left in the opening quarter. But, Caywood was able
to cut into the lead in the final minute of the frame with
tallies from Josh Fry and Cody Morris to make the score 8-6
after the first stanza.
Caywood continued that roll in the second frame a pair of
Clint Allen free throws led to two buckets from Fry to give
Caywood an 11-8 lead with 3:49 left in the first half. But,
Dresden rallied back as a layup from Coleman cut the lead to
one point. Then a three-point play by Zack Terry gave the
lead back to the Lions with just over two minutes left in
the half. A Terry free throw ended the run with 55 seconds
left in the half and gave Dresden a 14-11 lead. But, late
buckets from Caywood countered a Coleman free throw to tie
the game at 15-15 at the half.
Dresden jumped out to an early lead in the second half as
Coleman nailed a pair of free throws and McCulley hit a
jumper to open the third stanza and give the Lions a
four-point lead with just under five minutes left in the
frame. Marshawn Parker cut the Dresden lead to a single
point with a three-pointer, but Chris Peeler answered right
back with a trey of his own to keep the Lions up by four
points with 4:14 left in the third frame. After Terry
countered a Clint Allen jumper with one of his own, an Allen
three-point play cut the lead to one point with 2:14 left in
the third frame. Though Coleman nailed a layup later in the
frame, Fry nailed a late layup to make the score 26-25 at
the end of the third frame.
Dresden seemed poised to put the game away in the opening
moments of the final quarter as a pair of layups from
Coleman and a pair of free throws from O'Brien Washington
put the Lions up 32-25 with 3:47 left in the game. However,
Caywood had one last surge in them, as a three-pointer from
Landon Hehe and a Fry bucket cut the Dresden lead to two
points with less than two minutes left. Though the Lions
were only able to shoot 43 percent from the line in the
final moments, the DMS defense kept the Minutemen off the
board for the final two minutes to seal the win and the
championship for Dresden Middle School.

Lady Lions top Lady Bulldogs to
take District 15-A Title |
By J. R. Peevyhouse
Sports EditorIt was a game that many people
had penciled in back when the 2004-2005 basketball season
kicked off in November. While a matchup between the Gleason
Lady Bulldogs and the Dresden Lady Lions for the District
15-A championship on Friday night in Gleason was the safe
bet for much of the season, the outcome was anything but a
sure thing. And it would remain that way until the final
seconds of the girls district tournament.
But, at the beginning of the game, the Lady Lions seemed
ready to dominate the hosting Lady Bulldogs. After opening
the game with a 5-5 tie - thanks to a trey from Katie
Quinton and a layup from Brooke Levister for Dresden and a
three-pointer from Candace Green and a layup from Amber
Wiseman for Gleason, the Lady Lion offense roared over the
next two minutes. A Kaci Bailey three-pointer sparked a 10-0
run that she also capped with a pair of free throws. A trey
and a jumper from Quinton during that time helped give the
Lady Lions a 15-5 lead with 4:02 left in the first frame. A
three-pointer from Kayla Hudson finally broke the scoring
run and a layup from Riley Auvenshine layup cut the lead to
seven points. However, treys from Quinton and Levister
countered a pair of Auvenshine free throws to give Dresden
an 11-point lead with 1:31 left in the first frame. Gleason
was able to cut the lead 10 points at the end of the frame
when a layup by Auvenshine and a pair of Hudson free throws
countered an Ashlee Dubruiel trey to cut the Dresden lead to
26-16.

|
By J. R. Peevyhouse

Greenfield, winners of the last two District 15-A
Tournaments, found themselves in an unfamiliar spot on
Thursday night as they held the No. 3 seed going into the
semifinals. But, they had a familiar foe, as they faced the
South Fulton Red Devils - winners of the 15-A tourney in the
three years prior to Greenfield's recent run.
Though the 'Jackets had the Red Devils out-manned, the South
Fulton boys fought to the end before Greenfield took a 74-63
victory.
