Dresden splits with Greenfield in district action

By Jason Peevyhouse
Sports Editor

Both Dresden and Greenfield ended their pre-Christmas schedules with an important district battle as the two schools met in Greenfield on Tuesday night. In boys action, the Lions held off a lat Yellowjacket surge to take a 46-43 win over Greenfield. Earlier that night, the Greenfield Lady ’Jackets ended the first half of their schedule on a positive note as they handed the Lady Lions a 50-31 setback.

Both Dresden teams will be in action this week during the annual Martin Lions Club Christmas Tournament at Westview High School. Greenfield will travel to Clarksburg on Thursday for a non-district matchup with the Rockets and Lady Rockets.

After a strong start allowed the Greenfield girls to get a double-digit lead, the Greenfield Lady ’Jackets were assured of their first win over cross-county rival Dresden for the first time in recent history.

After a three-point play by Becky Atnip to start the game, a Magan Cash free throw made the score 4-0 with 6:08 left in the first frame. Dresden rallied with four points from Lacey Kelley to counter an Atnip jumper and cut the Greenfield lead to two points, but the Lady ’Jackets ended the first frame with buckets from Pannayottia Edmonston and Rhiannon Caudle to take a 10-4 lead after one quarter of play.

Westview falls to Union City in non-district action

By Rory Higgins
Sports Writer

With Christmas right around the corner on Thursday

evening, the Union City boys' basketball squad paid

the Westview Chargers a visit, taking a win over them

81-63.

For a while initially, the Chargers looked strong

and were right behind the Golden Tornadoes in score as

Cordney Booker and Keith Norris scored most of

Westview's 12 points in the first quarter to Union

City's leading 13.

Westview even momentarily gained the lead in the

beginning of the second quarter after a Norris

trifecta, making the score 16-14, but an

un-interrupted seven-point run from UCHS's Marcus

Weddle and Xavier Robinson, who both later turned out

to be point leaders in the game.
