Late Nanney field goal
gives Lions win over Rebs |
A 43-yard field goal by Dresden
kicker Ryan Nanney with less than 15 seconds remaining in
the game was what it took for the Dresden Lions to win,
25-22, over the Obion County Rebels during last Friday
night's game at Dresden's Rotary Field. Nanney's game
winning field goal broke a 22-tie in a game that started
approximately 45 minutes late due to thunderstorms and was
delayed further by approximately one hour at half-time to
allow further storms to move out of the area.
Obion County received the opening kick-off to start the
game and mounted a drive beginning at their own 12-yard line
to move the ball to the Lion five yard line before Dresden
senior defensive back Justin Davidson recovered a Rebel
fumble to give the Lions possession at their own four yard
line for their first offensive series of the game. Fourteen
plays later, Dresden scored on a seven yard run by running
back Matt Hewett. Nanney kicked the extra point on the
points-after-attempt to give the Lions a 7-0 edge with 39.8
seconds remaining in the first quarter.
The Rebels answered on their subsequent offensive
series on a 11 play drive that began at their own 23 yard
line. Obion County quarterback Logan Parker ran the option
play and after a short gain pitched out to Jacob Fulbright
to sprinted the balance of the 22 yards to the goal line for
the first Rebel TD of the evening. Fullbright then kicked
the extra point to tie the score at 7-all with 7:06
remaining in the second quarter.
Dresden scored again on the next offensive series
following the Obion County kick-off on a three yard run by
senior runningback Ryan Adams to cap off a 14 play, 70 yard
drive. Nanney booted the extra point on the PAT to give the
Lions a 14-7 lead with 46.8 seconds remaining in the first
half. Adams carried the ball six times during the drive to
gain 51 of the requisite 70 yards for the TD.
Following the extended halftime break, Dresden received
the kick-off and moved from their 22-yard line to the Rebel
25 where the 14 play drive stalled and the Lions went to
Nanney for a field goal attempt. Nanney's kick was barely
short of clearing the uprights on the 41-yard attempt to
return possession of the football to Obion County at their
own 20-yard line. Fourteen plays later, the Rebels scored on
a one-yard run by Garrett Grady. On the PAT, the Rebels
lined up as if to kick the extra point, the snap went to the
place kick holder, Chase Clanton, who carried the ball
around the right side for a two point conversion to give
Obion County a 15-14 lead with 11:15 remaining in the fourth
quarter.
The Rebels then went up 22-14 after Fullbright ran 13
yards for a TD and kicked the extra point with 3:42
remaining in the fourth quarter to culminate a six play, 72
yard drive beginning at their own 28 yard line.
An on-side kick following the TD gave Dresden
possession at their own 40-yard line. Nine plays later,
Hewett ran five yards with an excellent second effort to
score. Hewett then carried for two points by sprinting
around the outside of the right side of the line to tie the
score at 22-all with 1:40 remaining in the game.
The Lions kicked off to the Rebels and on the first
play from scrimmage Obion County fumbled the ball and the
loose football was eventually covered by Dresden's Kyle Odle
at the Obion County 46. Hewett ran on first down from the 46
to gain six yards and on second down a pass fell incomplete
to leave the Lions with a third and four at the Rebel 40
yard line; still outside field goal range. On third down,
Hewett again got the call and this time gained seven yards
to give the Lions a first down at the 33-yard line. Adams
was stopped for no gain on first down and quarterback Randy
Williams kept the ball on second down to gain five yards to
bring up a third and five situation at the 28-yard line. On
third down, a Williams pass fell incomplete bringing up a
fourth down with 12.3 second remaining in the game. Nanney
then attempted the field goal which was both long enough and
straight enough to win the game on the 43 yard attempt.
Statistically, Dresden had 17 earned first downs;
rushed 46 times to gain 293 yards on the ground; completed
five of eight pass attempts to gain 49 yards; turned over
possession on only one fumble during the game; punted one
time and was penalized six times to give up 40 yards. Obions
County had 14 earned first downs; rushed 39 times to gain
292 yards; completed three of five passes to gain 24 yards
with one interception; fumbled three times to give up
possession twice; punted one time; and was penalized five
times to give up 63 yards.
Matt Hewett led the Dresden offensive effort with 20
rushes to gain 149 yards and score two touchdowns. Ryan
Adams had a good night running the ball with 20 carries to
gain 118 yards and one pass reception good for nine yards.
Kyle Odle caught three passes during the game to gain 29
yards as the Lions opened up their offensive game more in
the air this week as compared to the previous game. Randy
Williams kept the ball three times to gain 21 yards. Justin
Davidson had one pass reception good for 11 yards. Adam
Clement carried one time for two yards and Clay Adams run
two times to gain two yards.
For Obion County, Garrett Grady was the leading rusher
with 113 yards on 21 carries. Jacob Fullbright ran eight
times to gain 83 yards and caught one pass good for 10
yards. Quarterback Logan Parker keptthe ball five times to
gain 67 yards.
This week the Dresden Lions will host Humboldt in a
region game at Dresden's Rotary Field. Game time is at 7:30
p.m.

Bulldogs top Fulton City 40-25
to move to 2-0 |
By Rory Higgins
Sports Writer As
thunderstorms raged in the area Friday night, the
Gleason and Fulton City squads rescheduled their game
for the following evening at 6:30.
That next night, the Bulldogs from Gleason, after a
bit of a struggle through the first half, took down
the Bulldogs from Fulton City on their home turf,
25-40.
Gleason had the ball first at the beginning of the
game after winning the toss and choosing to receive at
the start of the first half, but Fulton ended up
drawing first blood.
Despite making it all the way to the Fulton 16-yard
line, an incomplete pass on fourth down gave the blue
Bulldogs the ball. From there, quarterback Barry
Graves tossed the ball to Billy Madding behind him,
who then hit Daeron Williams downfield, who kept
running for a touchdown at 4:25.
With the kick good, the orange and black Bulldogs
were a bit frazzled as they were behind by seven and
as possession of the ball flip-flopped some until the
beginning of the second period.

DMS shuts out Lakewood; Sharon falls to GC |
|
By Rory Higgins
Sports Writer
The Dresden Middle School Lions
continued their successful start to the 2005 season as they
won their second straight shutout on Thursday night as they
traveled to Paris and defeated Lakewood 20-0.
After a fumble inside the 10-yard line on their first
drive, the Lions were eager to put the ball in the end zone
on their second possession. And, it did not take long for
that to happen. After a 19-yard run by Zack Jolley on the
first play of the second rive, a run by Tyler King set up a
three-yard scoring run by Chris Workman to put the Lions up
6-0 with 1:24 left in the first frame.
Dresden also got on the board late in the second
quarter as Jolley again played a big factor as his three
carries for 38 yards helped set up a four-yard run for King.
Dustin Neeley added the two-point conversion to make the
score 14-0 with 55 seconds left in the first half.
DMS put the game out of reach on the opening drive of
the second half. A 16-yard run by Jolley once again put the
Lions in scoring position. On the next play, quarterback
Dale Hutcherson scrambled the final four yards for the
touchdown to make the score 20-0.
The Lions subbed in their younger players for the
remainder of the game and the second string defense
continued to shut out the Lakewood team and seal the win.
Dresden Middle School will host Trenton on Thursday night at
6:30.
Gibson County 42
Sharon JH Eagles 40
At the Sharon Junior High's Homecoming, they invited
the Gibson County Junior High Pioneers out for what turned
out to be a really tense game for both teams.
In the beginning of play, two huge sweeps from Gibson
County's Trey Tate gave the Pioneers an early 14-0 lead at
3:56 into the first quarter.
With this hanging over the heads of the Eagles, the
Sharon players knew they had to do something fast, which was
just what SJH's Tyler Edwards decided to do.
Catching the ball at his team's 30-yard line, Edwards then
proceeded to run the seventy yards home for a touchdown.
With the two-point conversion no good, Sharon was back in
the game at 14-6 with 3:42 left in the quarter.
