Gleason dominates Yellowjackets for district win

By Rory Higgins
Sports Writer

On one of the sunniest and warmest afternoons this area has had this spring, the Gleason Bulldogs visited Callins Park in Greenfield on Monday to take on the hometown Yellowjackets.
In the first couple innings of play, both teams did not make any marks on the scoreboard, much less even get runners on base.
In the top of the first, Gleason's Jacob Howington was first up to bat and hit a single, but after Adam Bennett also hit a single, Howington was tagged out at second after a groundout from Justin Lyles to Jakob Perkins.
After one out in the top of the first, Greenfield ended Gleason's at bat with a double play. First off, Jonathan Grooms caught a hit for an out back in center field and, in the confusion with the runners on base and the caught out, tossed it to Josh Tharp at first base for the other out.
After two scoreless innings, Gleason came out of the top of the third with some points.
After a couple walks and a single filled up the bases three batters into the third, Bennett hit a single to send two runners home. Following a strikeout, Bradley Maddox made a hit and ended up getting out at first, but brought a runner home in the process.
Before the third and final out after a groundout from catcher Brett Perkins to Tharp on first base, Brandon Bailey hit a line drive a little ways into center field for a single to bring one more runner home, giving Gleason four runs.
In the bottom of the third, Maddox got two strikeouts with the first two batters and walked Aaron Davidson after he got hit with the ball. Following this, Maddox closed out the third with another strikeout with the next batter.
In the fourth, Gleason continued to gain on the scoreboard after batters such as Bennett, Howington, and Maddox were slowly knocking out singles, sending runners home one at a time, and making their way around the bases.
After adding four more points to their score, a force out at 2nd from Lyles ended the top of the fourth for Gleason. The rest of the fourth inning was quick as Greenfield went three up and three down after a couple caught outs and a strikeout.
Starting out the fifth inning, Gleason's first batter went out after a caught out from third baseman Adam Ledezma. But after this, Matt Smith made it to first after a hit on a error on the pitcher.
The bases were loaded shortly after Byron Fuqua drew a walk and Howington hit a single. Bennett hit a single after this to send Smith home, but Fuqua was caught out at third by Ledezma.
Slayton Gearin got a double following this to score Howington, but the next batter's hit to left field was caught out by Jonathan Dethloff, ending the top of the fifth with Gleason leading by 10.
Now able to end this game by the fifth, Gleason just had to prevent Greenfield from scoring. After Maddox walked the first two batters, he struck out the next two.
A full count was reached with the fifth batter up until his hit led to a force out at third by Bennett for the final out to end the game. Gleason won 10-0.

Dresden rallies to open district play with a win

The Dresden Lions, fresh off their second place finish in the St. Jude Classic over the weekend, began district play on Monday as they hosted the South Fulton Red Devils in the first half of a home-and-home series.
After falling behind 4-1 in the top of the fifth inning, the Lions rallied to retake the lead in their half of the inning before adding one in the sixth to get the 6-4 win.
After the Red Devils added two runs in the top of the fifth inning, the Lions roared back in the bottom half of that frame. Drew Vernon led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo homerun to cut the lead to two points. After singles from Derrick Hansen and Matt Thomas, Adam Clements tied the game with a two-run double to make the score 4-4. Matt Clements (courtesy runner for Adam Clements) then scored on a Levister single to give the Lions a 5-4 lead after five innings.
After Adam Clements struck out two of the three batters he faced in the sixth inning, the Lions added their sixth run as Vernon scored on an error to make the score 6-4.
Adam Clements struck out the side in the top of the seventh to seal the win.

Lady Lions stop late GHS rally to get district win

By J. R. Peevyhouse

The Dresden Lady Lions took an early lead on Monday afternoon, but saw that lead slip to just one run late in the game as Gleason added three runs in the top of the fifth inning. But, Dresden answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth inning to seal the 6-3 district win over the Lady Bulldogs.
Dresden got on the board early as Rook led off the bottom of the first win a double. After advancing to third on a passed ball, Rook scored on a Jessica Neisler groundout to put the Lady Lions on the board. The next batter, Brooke Levister, plated another run as she singled in Kelly Filtz, who had walked, to make the score 2-0 after one inning.
After a scoreless second inning, the Lady Lions got on the board again in the bottom of the third as a Lacie Kelley double plated two runs to make the score 4-0 after three innings.
After threatening twice with runners in scoring position and one out in two previous innings, the Lady Bulldogs finally got on the board in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, Brittany Pierce got an infield single. After Pierce was lifted for a courtesy runner, Lacie Trevathan reached on an error and Katlyn Gaylord singled to load the bases.  After a flyout gave the Lady Bulldogs two outs, a two-run single by Taylor Whorton cut the Dresden lead in half.  Ashley Camp plated another run on a single, cutting the lead to 4-3, but Dresden was able to get Wharton out at second base to end the threat.
