Charles F. Travis
Charles F. Travis, 85, of Martin, died Wednesday, June 8,
2005, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Union City. Funeral
services for Mr. Travis were held Friday, June 10, 2005, at
11:00 a.m. at Murphy Funeral Home in Martin. Burial followed
in East Side Cemetery in Martin. Rev. Scott Penick
officiated the services.
Mr. Travis was a retired heavy equipment operator and
farmer. He was also a member of Ralston Baptist Church. Mr.
Travis was born August 30, 1919 in Weakley County to the
late Fielden Travis and Lucille Adams Travis. In addition to
his parents, Mr. Travis was also preceded in death by his
wife, Louise Chappell Travis; a daughter, Judy Travis Ray;
three brothers, James H. Travis, Barton Travis, and Terrell
Travis; and a sister, Marshette Hynds.
Mr. Travis is survived by two sons, Ronnie Travis of Martin,
and Mike Travis of Martin; three grandchildren; and six
great-grandchildren. Emma Ruth Hollingsworth
Emma Ruth Hollingsworth, 91, of Sharon, died Tuesday, June
7, 2005, at her home. Funeral services for Mrs.
Hollingsworth were held Friday, June 10, 2005, at 1:00 p.m.
at Memphis Funeral Home. Burial followed in Memphis Memory
Gardens in Memphis.
Mrs. Hollingsworth worked in manufacturing. She was born May
29, 1914 in Sharon. Mrs. Hollingsworth was preceded in death
by two sisters, Lois Williams and Ruby Palmer; and a
brother, Aubry Williams.
Mrs. Hollingsworth is survived by her husband, Burt
Hollingsworth of Sharon; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Evelyn Brock Barber
Evelyn Brock Barber, 82, of Hendersonville, Tennessee,
formerly of Greenfield, died Sunday, June 12, 2005.
Graveside services for Mrs. Barber will be held Thursday,
June 16, 2005, at 1:30 p.m. at Highland Cemetery in
Greenfield. Judd Mowery will officiate the services.
Evelyn was born December 2, 1922, the daughter of the late
Jonnie Tillman and Hollis George Brock of Greenfield. She
was a graduate of Greenfield High School and Hall Moody
Junior College, now known as the University of Tennessee at
Martin.
In the last twenty years, Evelyn has been a Martin business
owner, worked at Volunteer General Hospital and the
Tennessee Development District as a Senior Aid. Prior to
moving to Weakley County, she was a homemaker and member of
St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Memphis, Tennessee.
Evelyn spent most of her retirement years researching and
compiling the history of Tillman (Tilghman) and Brock
migration from Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina to
Tennessee, as well as other family lineage. This research
took her to Tilghman Island, Maryland, Virginia, North
Carolina, and Florida. This research was responsible for
bringing visitors from as far away as California, Oregon,
Texas, and Canada to Greenfield to assist others in research
of their own Brock and Tillman lineage.
Survivors include her four children, daughter, Dorothy
(Gary) Winkler, Southaven, Mississippi; sons, Robert
(Barbara) Briggs, Davidsonville, Maryland, Sam (Laura)
Briggs III, New Port News, Virginia, and Jim (Jewel) Briggs,
Hendersonville, Tennessee; grandchildren, Maria Robinson of
Lakeland, Tennessee, Ken Plunk of McKinney, Texas, Roxane
Bratcher of Cumming, Georgia, Jessica Briggs of New Port
News, Virginia, Brock Briggs of Maryville, Tennessee,
Chassity Adams of San Bernardino, California, Beau Briggs of
Hendersonville, Tennessee; and ten great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her
husbands, Sam J. Briggs, Jr. of Dyer, Tennessee, and Cecil
(Dick) Barber of Ruffin, North Carolina. James R.
Riley, Jr.
James R. Riley, Jr., 85, of Martin, died Thursday, June 9,
2005, at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital in Jackson.
Funeral services for Mr. Riley were held Monday, June 13,
2005, at 1:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church. Burial
followed in East Side Cemetery in Martin. Rev. Roger S.
Oldham officiated the services.
Mr. Riley was an insurance financial property appraiser for
the state and owned and operated Riley's Furniture &
Appliance Store in Martin. He was a member of the First
Baptist Church in Martin and the Fellowship Sunday School
Class and former Sunday school teacher. Mr. Riley was born
June 4, 1920 in Henry County to the late James R. Riley, Sr.
and Wilna Shell Riley. In addition to his parents, Mr. Riley
was also preceded in death by two brothers, Rob Roy Riley
and Billy Riley; and a sister, Katherine Carman.
Mr. Riley is survived by his wife, Ruby Nell Stroud Riley of
Martin (Mrs. Riley passed away the day after Mr. Riley on
June 10); two sons, Jim Riley (Vickie) of Oakland,
Tennessee, and Bob Riley (Nylene) of Huntingdon; a sister,
Ann Hackett of Jonesboro, Georgia; and five grandchildren,
Jessica Riley of Oakland, Tennessee, Jamie Riley of Oakland,
Tennessee, Audra Lindsey of Munford, Tennessee, April Riley
of Huntingdon, and Will Riley of Huntingdon. Ned
Pryor
Ned Pryor, 74, of Union City, died Tuesday, June 7, 2005, at
Jackson-Madison County Hospital in Jackson. Funeral services
for Mr. Pryor were held Thursday, June 9, 2005, at 2:00 p.m.
at White-Ranson Funeral Home in Union City. Burial followed
in Obion County Memorial Gardens in Union City. Rev. Jimmy
Calhoun officiated the services.
Mr. Pryor worked for Volunteer Express and Sartin Truck
Lines. He was also a Veteran of the United States Army
serving in the Korean War. Mr. Pryor was a member of Cobbs
Chapel Methodist Church and the Woodmen of the World. He was
born October 9, 1930 in Hughes, Arkansas to the late Jake
Hayes Pryor and Sarah Dabbs Pryor. In addition to his
parents, Mr. Pryor was also preceded in death by a daughter,
Janice Pryor; and a brother, Ken Pryor.
Mr. Pryor is survived by his wife, Rachel Joyner Pryor of
Union City; three daughters, Cindy and Ernie Siglow of
Martin, Gina and Arch Caruthers of Union City, and Julie and
Jeff Rousch of Union City; a brother, Billy Pryor of Troy;
grandchildren, Amy Hoskins of Gleason, Lee Ann Harper of
Sharon, Hannah Pryor of Union City, Tristan Rousch of Union
City, and Elysia Rousch of Union City; and two
great-grandchildren, Clayton Harper of Sharon, and Madyson
Hoskins of Gleason. Valda Lee Rhodes
Valda Lee Rhodes, 86, of Dresden, died Saturday, June 11,
2005, in Dresden. Funeral services for Mrs. Rhodes were held
Monday, June 13, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. at Bowlin Funeral Home
Chapel in Dresden. Burial followed in Sunset Cemetery in
Dresden. Brian Crow officiated the services.
Mrs. Rhodes was a homemaker and a retired inspector for
Chrysler Corporation after 28 years. She was a member of the
Church of Christ. She was a native of Weakley County and the
daughter of the late Andy and Hettie Crosser Jones. In
addition to her parents, Mrs. Rhodes was also preceded in
death by a brother, Clyde Jones.
Mrs. Rhodes is survived by her husband, Dallas Parnell
"Bill" Rhodes of Dresden; a daughter, Donice (John) Breza of
Shelby Township, Michigan; a son, Ralph (Joanne) Rhodes of
San Diego, California; six grandchildren, John Michael Breza,
Sharice Breza, Amy Ghormley, Matt Young, Rachel King, and
Ryan Rhodes; and four great-grandchildren, Sara King, Abbie
King, Trevor Young, and Taylor Young. Elsie R. Pate
Elsie R. Pate, 96, of Mokena, Illinois, died Monday, June 6,
2005, at her home. Funeral services for Ms. Pate were held
Friday, June 10, 2005, at 10:00 a.m. at Gardner Funeral Home
in Sharon. Burial followed in Woodlawn Cemetery. Bruce
McCartney and Don Bowlin officiated the services.
Ms. Pate was an assembly line worker. She was born June 2,
1909 in Sharon. Ms. Pate was preceded in death by five
sisters and two brothers.
Ms. Pate is survived by two sons, Earl Wayne Pate of Mokena
Illinois, and Richard Douglas Pate of Bloomington, Illinois;
a brother, Bill Poynter of Sharon; two sisters, Louise
Przygoda of Sharon, and Winnie Sims of Sharon; eight
grandchildren; and eighteen great-grandchildren.
Ethel Nadean Laws
Ethel Nadean Laws, 82, of Dresden, died Saturday, June 11,
2005, at Weakley County Nursing Home in Dresden. Funeral
services for Miss Laws were held Monday, June 13, 2005, at
3:00 p.m. at New Hope Baptist Church in Latham. Burial
followed in New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery. Bro. Donald
Doster and Bro. Roy Auvenshine officiated the services.
Miss Laws was a retired factory worker at Kellwood and was a
member of New Hope Baptist Church. She was a native of
Weakley County and the daughter of the late Samuel Haywood
and Bertha Cardelia Means Laws. In addition to her parents,
Miss Laws was also preceded in death by three sisters, Lucy
Irene Laws, Gladys Billingsby, and Treva Laws; and three
brothers, Travis Laws, Dairel Laws, and Joe Thomas Laws.
Miss Laws is survived by six nieces, Donna Hatler, Brenda
Scearce, Melanie Johnson, Joyce Hoke, Sandra Walker, and
Tammy Dunn; two nephews, Joe David Laws, and Barton Laws;
eight great-nieces; and seven great-nephews. George
Willis West
George Willis West, 84, of Sharon, died Saturday, June 4,
2005, at Martin Health Care. Funeral services for Mr. West
were held Tuesday, June 7, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. at Gardner
Funeral Home in Sharon. Burial followed in Alamo Cemetery in
Rives. Rev. Dewayne Thomas officiated the services.
Mr. West was born April 26, 1921 in Obion County. He was
preceded in death by his wife, Flossy Davis West; a son,
Georgie Wayne West; a brother, James West; and three
sisters, Nanny Johnson, Myrtle Hawks, and Louise Smith.
Mr. West is survived by three daughters, Shelby Farley of
Portage, Indiana, Brenda Iwan of Portage, Indiana, and Becky
Vincent of Lake Station, Indiana; three sons, Earl West of
Sharon, Kenneth West of Lake Station, Indiana, and Larry
West of Dandridge, Tennessee; a brother, Leon West of
Illinois; twenty-eight grandchildren; sixty-two
great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Janice Sanderson Flood
Janice Sanderson Flood, 57, of Martin, died Saturday, June
11, 2005, at her home. Funeral services for Mrs. Flood were
held Tuesday, June 14, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. at Murphy Funeral
Home in Martin. Burial followed in Poyners Chapel Cemetery
in Wingo, Kentucky. Rev. Roger S. Oldham officiated the
services.
Mrs. Flood formerly worked at Plaza Cards & Books and was a
member of the First Baptist Church. She was born September
15, 1947 in Mayfield, Kentucky to the late Leonard Sanderson
and Pauline Moreland Sanderson.
Mrs. Flood is survived by her husband, Mr. Charles F. Flood
of Martin; two daughters, Renee' Smith of Martin, and Missy
Osteen of Martin; two brothers, Larry David Sanderson of
Martin, and Jerry Sanderson of Denver, Colorado; two
sisters, Linda McKillip of Chillicothe, Ohio, and Donna
Price of Denver, Colorado; eight grandchildren; and four
great-grandchildren. Ruby Nell Riley
Ruby Nell Riley, 82, of Martin, died Friday, June 10, 2005,
at her home. Funeral services for Mrs. Riley were held
Monday, June 13, 2005, at First Baptist Church in Martin.
Burial followed in East Side Cemetery in Martin. Rev. Roger
S. Oldham officiated the services.
Mrs. Riley was a social worker for the state welfare office
and was retired from Reelfoot Regional Library in Martin.
She was also a volunteer for Meals On Wheels and a Gray Lady
at Volunteer Community Hospital. Mrs. Riley attended UT
Junior College, Vanderbilt University, and graduated from
Bethel College. She was a member of the First Baptist Church
in Martin. Mrs. Riley was born July 22, 1922 in Weakley
County to the late Ealy Stroud and Zora McCaleb. In addition
to her parents, Mrs. Riley was also preceded in death by her
husband on June 9, 2005, James R. Riley, Jr.; and a sister,
Helen Trentham.
Mrs. Riley is survived by two sons, Jim Riley (Vickie) of
Oakland, Tennessee, and Bob Riley (Nylene) of Huntingdon; a
sister, Katie Creak of Somerville, Tennessee; and five
grandchildren. Jessica Riley of Oakland, Tennessee, Jamie
Riley of Oakland, Tennessee, Audra Lindsey of Munford,
Tennessee, April Riley of Huntingdon, and Will Riley of
Huntingdon. Wilburn Harold Foley
Wilburn Harold Foley, 84, died Sunday, June 5, 2005, at the
Tennessee State Veterans Home in Humboldt. Graveside
services for Mr. Foley were held Monday, June 6, 2005, at
11:00 a.m. at Eastside Cemetery in Martin. Ryan Potts
officiated the services.
Mr. Foley was a veteran of the United States Army. He was
born May 29, 1921 in Weakley County.
Mr. Foley is survived by two sons, Roy Foley of Martin, and
Dennis Foley of Raleigh, North Carolina; two brothers,
Cleburn Foley of Martin, and Thomas Foley of Chicago,
Illinois; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
