Sally E. Bynum
Sally E. Bynum, 100, of Sharon, formerly of Gleason, died
Monday, February 7, 2005, at her home. Funeral services for
Mrs. Bynum were held Thursday, February 10, 2005, at 10:00
a.m. at Gallimore Funeral Home Chapel in Gleason. Burial
followed in Mt. Zion Cemetery. Rev. Jim Pinnell, Rev. Mike
Walker, and Rev. Toy Brindley officiated the services.
Mrs. Bynum was a homemaker and member of Gleason Cumberland
Presbyterian Church. She was born March 27, 1904 in Sharon
to the late George and Susie Whitherington Poynter. In
addition to her parents, Mrs. Bynum was also preceded in
death by her husband, Leonard Bynum.
Mrs. Bynum is survived by two sons, Leonard Bynum, Jr. of
Huntsville, Alabama, and Ronald Bynum of Gurley, Alabama; a
brother, Bill Poynter of Sharon; three sisters, Elsie Pate
of Chicago, Illinois, Louise Prozgoda of Sharon, and Winnie
Sims of Sharon; four grandchildren; and seven
great-grandchildren. Olen Okie Hornsby
Services for Olen Oakie Hornsby, 63, were on Tuesday,
February 15, at 1:00 p.m. in the Cedar Avenue Chapel of
McKenzie Funeral Home, with Rev. Dwayne Thomas and Jim
Schuster officiating. Interment followed in Sellers Hill
Cemetery in Clarksburg.
Mr. Hornsby, a retired employee of MTD in Martin, died
Saturday morning, February 12, at his residence in McKenzie.
He was a native of Fireco, West Virginia, and was born on
October 11, 1941, to the late Oakie Thomas Hornsby and Mary
Elsie Gill Hornsby. Before living in the McKenzie area, he
resided in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and was Baptist by faith.
Survivors include his wife, Gloria Ann Scott Hornsby; two
daughters, Sheri Wiley of Martin and Lisa Weaver of
McKenzie; two sons, Tim Hornsby of Dresden and Dennis Fisher
of Florida; nine grandchildren; and eleven nephews.
Mrs. Eddie Lee Reed
Mrs. Eddie Lee Reed, 99, of Gleason, died Saturday, February
5, 2005, at Weakley County Nursing Home in Dresden. Funeral
services for Mrs. Reed were held Tuesday, February 8, 2005,
at 11:00 a.m. at Gallimore Funeral Home Chapel in Gleason.
Burial followed in Mt. Zion Cemetery. Rev. Fred Morris and
Rev. Bob Copeland officiated the services.
Mrs. Reed was a retired house parent for a Boy's Home in
Illinois and member of Beech Springs Baptist Church. She was
born July 7, 1905 in Gleason to the late Edd and Sue
Berryhill Mitchell. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Reed
was also preceded in death by her husband, Guy Reed.
Minnie Belle Walker Counsell
Minnie Belle Walker Counsell, 99, of Martin, died Saturday,
February 12, 2005, at Volunteer Community Hospital in
Martin. Graveside services for Mrs. Counsell were held
Monday, February 14, 2005, at 1:00 p.m. at Oak Hill
Cemetery. Rev. Mary Mitchell officiated the service.
Mrs. Counsell was a homemaker and member of Oak Hill United
Methodist Church. She was born October 3, 1905 in Carroll
County to the late E.J. Walker and Lacy Jane Langley Walker.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Counsell was also preceded
in death by her husband, James Edward Counsell; two
brothers, U.L. Walker and Roy E. Walker; and two sisters,
Velma Vernell Robertson and Lockie B. Walker.
Lyndell Sawyers
Lyndell Sawyers, 90, of Gleason, died Sunday, February 13,
2005, at McKenzie Regional Hospital in McKenzie. Funeral
services for Mr. Sawyers were held Tuesday, February 15,
2005, at 2:00 p.m. at Gallimore Funeral Home Chapel in
Gleason. Burial followed in Hopewell Cemetery. Rev. Keith
Sumner and Ronnie Bates officiated the services.
Mr. Sawyers was a retired postal employee and owner of
Sawyer's Variety Store. He was also a member of Gleason
First Baptist Church. Mr. Sawyers was born October 7, 1914
in Gleason to the late Roscoe Earl and Aarh Wray Sawyers.
Mr. Sawyers is survived by his wife, Nina Brewer Sawyers;
two sons, Bob Sawyers of Somerville, Tennessee, and Ken
"Scooter" Sawyers of Knoxville, Tennessee; a daughter, Pam
Sherrill of Cookeville, Tennessee; five grandchildren; and
seven great-grandchildren.
Wynndell Cunningham
Wynndell Cunningham, 69, of Dresden, died Tuesday, February
8, 2005, at Weakley County Nursing Home in Dresden. Funeral
services for Mr. Cunningham were held Friday, February 11,
2005, at 2:00 p.m. at Bowlin Funeral Home Chapel in Dresden.
Burial followed in Sunset Cemetery in Dresden. Richard
Carson and Steve Boone officiated the services.
Mr. Cunningham was an Executive Labor Representative for the
AFL-CIO and a member of the Dresden Church of Christ. He was
also a veteran of the United States Army. He was born in
Lake County to Columbus Wynn Cunningham, who preceded him in
death, and Elnora Eunice Murray Cunningham of Dyer.
In addition to his mother, Mr. Cunningham is also survived
by his wife, Mrs. Margie Boone Cunningham of Dresden; a
daughter, Wendy (Steve) Soltys of Woodstock, Illinois; two
sisters, Dee Lane Wright of Dyer, and Lanna Kay Cooper of
Dyer; a brother, Lemmie Cunningham of Memphis; and two
grandchildren, Jessica and Travis Soltys.
Clifton Wilkerson
Clifton Wilkerson, 77, of Mayfield, Kentucky, died Saturday,
February 5, 2005, at Western Baptist Hospital. Funeral
services for Mr. Wilkerson were held Tuesday, February 8,
2005, at 1:00 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home in Mayfield. Burial
followed in Mayfield Memory Gardens. Rev. Robert Johnson
officiated the services.
Mr. Wilkerson was a retired millwright and veteran of the
United States Army. He was a member of the Northside Baptist
Church. Mr. Wilkerson was preceded in death by his parents,
Leo and Hattie Mae Wilkerson; a sister, Aileen Walker; and a
brother, Earl Wilkerson.
Mr. Wilkerson is survived by his wife, Ima Jean Lee
Wilkerson; a daughter, Mitzi Kerassidis of Sharon; a son,
Timothy Wilkerson of New Orleans, Louisiana; a stepson,
Terry Fox of Union City; three brothers, Fred Wilkerson of
Dresden, Gerald Wilkerson of Dresden, and Jimmy Wilkerson of
Memphis, Tennessee; and six grandchildren.
Amanda Stafford Lopez
Amanda Stafford Lopez, 19, of Martin, died Friday, February
11, 2005, at Methodist Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.
Funeral services for Mrs. Lopez were held Tuesday, February
15, 2005, at 1:00 p.m. at Murphy Funeral Home in Martin.
Burial followed in East Side Cemetery in Martin. Rev. Fady
Al-Hagal officiated the services.
Mrs. Lopez was a homemaker and member of the First Church of
God in Union City. She was born March 24, 1985 in Berwyn,
Illinois.
Mrs. Lopez is survived by her husband, Tito Antonio Lopez of
Martin; her parents, Ronald Stafford, Sr. and Wanda
Smallwood Stafford of Dresden; a brother, Ronnie Stafford,
Jr. of Dresden; and two sisters, Charlene Vermillian of
Dresden, and Sherry Pleasant of Tacoma, Washington.
Janie Kemp Reed
Janie Kemp Reed, 92, of Jackson, died Sunday, February 13,
2005, at her home. Funeral services for Mrs. Reed will be
held today, Wednesday, February 16, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. at
Southside Church of Christ in Dresden. Burial will follow in
Sunset Cemetery in Dresden. E. Claude Gardner will officiate
the services.
Mrs. Reed was born March 22, 1912 to Bob and Sallie Shobe
Kemp and was the seventh child of twelve children and the
last to survive. She was reared in the Bethany and Little
Zion communities of northeast Weakley County. She attended
local grade schools and Palmersville High School. While
attending Murray State College, she married Lois Elvern
Reed, who preceded her in death in 1983. Mrs. Reed was
always interested in education and was active in the PTA and
was a long-term substitute teacher. Later she became
involved with Field Enterprise Corp. starting as a sales
person and rose to Area Manager retiring at the age of 70.
She was baptized in 1924 and united with Bethany Church of
Christ and later was a charter member of the Southside
Church of Christ in Dresden and attended until moving to
Jackson in 2001. In Jackson, she was associated with the
North Jackson Church of Christ. Her remaining years were
spent at Morningside of Jackson, where she passed away.
Mrs. Reed is survived by four children, William B. Reed of
Lena, Illinois, Anne Alexander of Dresden, Wallace Reed of
Easton, Pennsylvania, and Kemp G. Reed of Jackson,
Tennessee; twelve grandchildren; seventeen
great-grandchildren; and fourteen great-great-grandchildren.
Jerry Edward Hall
Jerry Edward Hall, 60, of Fulton, Kentucky, died Tuesday,
February 8, 2005, at his home. Memorial graveside services
for Mr. Hall were held Saturday, February 12, 2005, at 1:00
p.m. at Obion Co. Memorial Gardens in Union City. Rev.
Michael Farmer officiated the services.
Mr. Hall was a 20-year employee of H&O Tool and Die in Union
City. He was a United States Army veteran and member of the
Shady Grove Methodist Church in Union City. Mr. Hall was
born March 19, 1944 in Weakley County to the late Hafford
and Virgie Louise Edwards Hall. In addition to his parents,
Mr. Hall was also preceded in death by a sister, Phyllis
Rowden.
Mr. Hall is survived by his wife, whom he married January
25, 1992, Peggy Stroud Hall of Fulton; son and
daughter-in-law, Charlie and Brenda Hall of Martin; son,
Kevin Hall of Union City; stepson and step-daughter-in-law,
James (Rich) and Sissy Neill of Clinton, Kentucky;
mother-in-law, Nell Stroud of Fulton; a brother, Michael
Hall of Memphis; one granddaughter, Ashley Nicole Neill of
Hickman, Kentucky; and one step-grandson, Tyler Kearby of
Clinton, Kentucky.
Eulain Thomas Killebrew
Eulain Thomas Killebrew, 79, of Dresden, died Thursday,
February 10, 2005, at Volunteer Community Hospital in
Martin. Funeral services for Mr. Killebrew were held Sunday,
February 13, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. at Bowlin Funeral Home
Chapel in Dresden. Burial followed in New Hope Cemetery in
Latham. Bro. Roy Auvenshine officiated the services.
Mr. Killebrew was a retired rural mail carrier and farmer.
He was a United States Army veteran and 50+ year member of
the American Legion Post #94 in Dresden. Mr. Killebrew was a
native of Weakley County and the son of the late Pete and
Agna Gatewood Killebrew. In addition to his parents, Mr.
Killebrew was also preceded in death by a brother, Eugene
"Pappy" Killebrew.
Mr. Killebrew is survived by his wife, Hazel Harwood
Killebrew of Dresden; a daughter, Judith (William) Davis
Martin; two sons, Larry Killebrew of Charlotte, Tennessee,
and Mark Killebrew of Ashland City; two stepsons, Chuck
Brundige of Dresden, and Chad Brundige of Martin; a brother,
Hue W. Killebrew of Martin; thirteen grandchildren; and
seven great-grandchildren.
Ethel Johnson
Ethel Johnson, 95, of Dresden, died Saturday, February 12,
2005, at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin. Funeral
services for Mrs. Johnson were held Monday, February 14,
2005, at 2:00 p.m. at Gallimore Funeral Home Chapel in
Gleason. Burial followed in Mt. Zion Cemetery. Hugh Downen
officiated the services.
Mrs. Johnson was retired from Baybee Shoe. She was born
August 10, 1909 in Sharon to the late Alvin and Mary Jane
Medlock Adams. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Johnson was
also preceded in death by her husband, Berthal Johnson; and
a daughter, Virgie "Helen" Keeling.
Mrs. Johnson is survived by three sisters, Clara Webb of
Gleason, Agnes Hatley of Dresden, and Odell Blakemore of
Dresden.
Thomas George Kriske, Jr.
Thomas George Kriske, Jr., 42, of Chicago Ridge, Illinois,
died Monday, February 7, 2005, at his home. Graveside
services for Mr. Kriske were held Monday, February 14, 2005,
at 1:00 p.m. at Tansil Cemetery in Sharon. Rev. David
Freeman officiated the service.
Mr. Kriske was a maintenance mechanic. He was born February
17, 1962. Mr. Kriske was preceded in death by his
grandfather, Aubrey Cross.
Mr. Kriske is survived by his wife, Ann Kriske of Chicago
Ridge, Illinois; a daughter, Marianne Kriske of Chicago
Ridge, Illinois; his father, Thomas George Kriske, Sr. of
Chicago, Illinois; his mother, Sherry Cross Kriske of
Martin; two sisters, Karen Hoffman of Norridge, Illinois,
and Kathy LaCroy of Chicago, Illinois; and his grandmother,
Dorothy Barnett Cross of Martin.
