Dr. Billy M. Pitts
Dr. Billy M. Pitts, 80, of Greenfield died August 17,
2005, at the Traditional Care facility in Jackson. Funeral
services for Dr. Pitts were held Saturday, August 20, 2005,
at 11:00 a.m. at Williams Funeral Home in Greenfield. Dr.
Mickey Carpenter, District Superintendent of Dyersburg
Conference of United Methodist Church and former minister
for Greenfield's UMC, conducted the service. Leslie Avery,
niece, sang a medley of Dr. Pitt's favorite hymns. Keely
Pitts Scanlan, daughter, gave a loving tribute to her
father. Rev. Randy Stacy, present minister of Greenfield
United Methodist Church, offered words of encouragement to
the family and friends. Burial followed in Highland Cemetery
in Greenfield.
Dr. Pitts was born May 27, 1925, in Sharon to the late
Joseph F. Pitts and Sarah M. Pitts. He was a pilot in the
U.S. Air Force during World War II. He graduated from the
Southern College of Optometry in Memphis in 1949 and
practiced in Greenfield and he retired in 1998.
Dr. Pitts was an active member of the Greenfield United
Methodist Church for forty-four years and served as past
treasurer, Sunday School teacher, and choir director for
many of those years.
Survivors include his wife, Faye Lackey Pitts of
Greenfield; two daughters and a son-in-law, Keely and David
Scanlan or Rocklin, California; and Lori Pitts of Rancho
Santa Margarita, California; and a grandson, Benjamin
Scanlan of Rocklin, California. James Richard
"Steve" Cornell
James Richard "Steve" Cornell, 93 of Dresden, died
Friday, August 19, 2005, at the Weakley County Nursing Home
in Dresden. Services for Mr. Cornell were held Sunday,
August 21, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. in the Bowlin Funeral Home
Chapel in Dresden. Burial was in the Sunset Cemetery in
Dresden. Rev. Jim Calhoun officiated the services.
Mr. Cornell was a Machinist for Teletype Corporation.
He was born in Sharon to the late Isham and Gussie Hunt
Cornell. He was a World War II Army Veteran and attended the
Dresden First United Methodist Church. In addition to his
parents, Mr. Cornell was preceded in death by a sister,
Winnie Powell and a brother, Harry Cornell.
Mr. Cornell is survived by his wife, Lona Harris Hamlin
Bowlin Cornell; two step daughters, Shirley Bowlin Miles of
Bartlett, Illinois and Betty Bowlin Airhart of North Aurora,
Illinois; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Mary Beth Brewer
Mary Beth Brewer, 44, of Martin, formerly of Dresden,
died Tuesday, August 23, 2005, at St. Francis Hospital,
Bartlett, in Memphis. Funeral services for Miss Brewer were
held Saturday, August 27, 2005, at 10:00 a.m. at Bowlin
Funeral Home Chapel in Dresden. Burial followed in Sunset
Cemetery in Dresden. Bro. Mike Tucker and Bro. Eddie
Hutchens officiated the services.
Miss Brewer was a secretary with the Martin Housing
Authority. She was also a member of the Dresden Church of
Christ, where she was former church secretary, and a member
of the David Johnson Chorus. Miss Brewer was born in Memphis
to the late Dodds and Bonnell Carlton Brewer.
Miss Brewer is survived by a sister, Talma Burgess of
Dresden; a niece, Kim Powell of Dresden; and a nephew, Kerry
Adams of Dresden. Mr. Bill Eubanks
Mr. Bill Eubanks, 72, of Union City, died Tuesday,
August 23, 2005, at his home. Services for Mr. Eubanks were
held Friday, August 26, 2005, at 3:00 p.m. in the Murphy
Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in the Stanley Chapel
Cemetery in Union City. Rev. Larry Humbert officiated the
services.
Mr. Eubanks owned and operated Bill's Welding Shop. Mr.
Eubanks was born January 13, 1933 to the late Luther Eubanks
and Mary Melton Eubanks. In addition to his parents, Mr.
Eubanks was preceded in death by three brothers, Tommy Lee
Eubanks, Edward "Boy" Eubanks and Doris Eubanks and two
sisters, Lucille Gainey and Bessie Ann Lisk.
Mr. Eubanks is survived by a special friend, Jane
Conley Sanford of Union City; two sons, Danny Eubanks of
Cordova, North Carolina and Joe Eubanks of Rockingham, North
Carolina; two brothers, James Eubanks of Charlotte, North
Carolina and Rusty Barrett of Illinois; four sisters, Wilma
Bailey of Rockingham, North Carolina, Jessie Gathings of
Rockingham, North Carolina; Raymel McQuage of Hamlet, North
Carolina and Peggy Andrews of Hamlet, North Carolina; two
grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a niece,
Debbie Doss of Harris Station, Tennessee.
James C. Morris
James C. Morris, 84, of Dresden, died Sunday, August
21, 2005, at the Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin.
Services for Mr. Morris were held Wednesday, August 24,
2005, at 2:00 p.m. in the Bowlin Funeral Home Chapel in
Dresden. Burial was in Hopewell Cemetery in Gleason. Bro.
Terry Griffin officiated the services.
Mr. Morris was a Farmer. He was a native of Dyer
County. He was reared by his mother and step-father, Willis
and Lula Moore Woolverton. Mr. Morris was a US Navy Veteran
of WWII.
Mr. Morris is survived by his wife of 62 years, Helen
Paucsek Morris; three daughters, Sharon Bowers (Skip)
Lamoreaux of Martin, Phyllis (Mike) Espinosa of Winter
Garden, Florida and Joan M. Morris of Denver, Colorado; a
son, James A. Morris of Bakersfield, California; a brother,
Richard Woolverton of Dyersburg; three grandchildren, Jay
(Leigh Ann) Bowers of Martin, Brent Bowers of Martin and
Kenny Morris of Dresden; one step grandchild, Charles
Lamoreaux of South Carolina; one great grandchild, Kirkland
Morris Bowers of Martin. John K. Wilson
John K. Wilson, 64, of Dresden, died Sunday, August 28,
2005, at Madison County General Hospital in Jackson. Funeral
services for Mr. Wilson were held Tuesday, August 30, 2005,
at 10:00 a.m. at Harmony Baptist Church in Dresden. Burial
followed in Obion County Memorial Garden in Union City. Rev.
Doug Morris and Rev. Don Bowlin officiated the services.
Mr. Wilson was a carpenter and contractor. He formerly
worked at Vowell & Son Lumber Company and retired from
Southern Cotton in 2002. He was a member of Harmony Baptist
Church. Mr. Wilson was born September 18, 1940 in McConnell
(Obion County) to the late Lonzo K. Wilson and Dilcie Sills
Wilson. In addition to his parents, Mr. Wilson was also
preceded in death by a sister, Betty Wilson.
Mr. Wilson is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Frances
Marcom Wilson of Dresden; a daughter, Stephanie Hope Wilson
of Martin; and four sisters, Sarah Hill of Fulton, Kentucky,
Rosa Berry of Greenfield, Alice Essary of Dresden, and
Sammie Frence of Knoxville. Mary Emaline McCaslin
Mary Emaline McCaslin, 84, of Greenfield, died Tuesday,
August 23, 2005, at the McKenzie Health Care Center in
McKenzie. Services for Mrs. McCaslin were held Thursday,
August 25, 2005, at 1:30 p.m. in the Williams Funeral Home
Chapel. Burial was in the Davidson Chapel Cemetery. Jerry
Crouse of Dyer and Gene Rollins of Bradford officiated the
services.
Mrs. McCaslin was a Factory Worker. She attended the
Assembly of God Church. Mrs. McCaslin was born February 26,
1921 to the late John Know and Ethel Bell. In addition to
her parents, Mrs. McCaslin was preceded in death by her
husband, Etho McCaslin.
Mrs. McCaslin is survived by three daughters, Linda
McCaslin Davis of McKenzie, Rose McCaslin Brummitt of
Bartlett and Kay McCaslin Allen of Huntingdon; a son, Donnie
McCaslin of Trenton; a sister, Elsie Harrison of Bradford; a
brother, David Knott of Greenfield; nine grandchildren; 15
great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Wayne Emerson Garner
Wayne Emerson Garner, 67, of Martin, died Thursday,
August 25, 2005, at Jackson Regional Hospital. Funeral
services for Mr. Garner were held Saturday, August 27, 2005,
at 3:00 p.m. at Mt. Pelia Baptist Church. Burial followed in
East Side Cemetery in Martin. Rev. Ryan Potts and Rev.
Kenneth Springer officiated the services.
Mr. Garner formerly worked at Airport Machine
Corporation and was a former Chief of Police for the City of
Martin. He was a member of Mt. Pelia Baptist Church and a
graduate of Martin High School. Mr. Garner was born
September 6, 1937 in Gibson County to the late Jeff Garner
and Katie Hay Garner. In addition to his parents, Mr. Garner
was also preceded in death by two brothers, Hillary Garner
and Robert F. (Bobby) Garner; and two sisters, Josephine
Grimes and Margaret Miller.
Mr. Garner is survived by his wife, Melba Boyd Garner
of Martin; a son, Tim Garner of Martin; two daughters,
Jackie Huggins of Greenfield, and Jeri Springer of Martin;
two brothers, Charles Garner of Chicago, Illinois, and
Howard (Happy) Garner of Martin; two sisters, Dovie Fuller
of Memphis, and Kathryn Brock of Martin; four grandchildren,
Crystal Huggins, Shannon Ary, Ryan Garner, and Travis
Garner; and two great-grandchildren, Katie Huggins and
Elizabeth Davis.
