Alda Peery Poynter
Alda Peery Poynter, 87, of Maplewood, Louisiana, died
Sunday, April 3, 2005, in a Sulphur, Louisiana hospital.
Funeral services for Mrs. Poynter were held Tuesday, April
5, 2005, at 10:00 a.m. at Robinson Funeral Home Chapel in
Sulphur, Louisiana. Burial followed in Mimosa Pines Cemetery
in Carlyss, Louisiana. Craig Peters officiated the services.
Mrs. Poynter was a native of Dresden and a resident of
Maplewood, Louisiana, since 1947. She was a member of
Maplewood Church of Christ and a homemaker. Mrs. Poynter was
preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Wayne M. Poynter, Sr.
Mrs. Poynter is survived by a son, Mr. Wayne M. Poynter, Jr.
and wife, Bonnie Trahan Poynter of Lake Charles, Louisiana;
two grandsons, Mr. Jason Wayne Poynter and wife, Christine
of Maplewood, Louisiana, and Mr. Justin Martin Poynter of
Baton Rouge, Louisiana; and three great-grandchildren,
Robert, Camille and Hayden. Billy Rutledge Ellis
Billy Rutledge Ellis, 65, of Gleason, died Friday, April 1,
2005, at Jackson Madison County General Hospital in Jackson.
Funeral services for Mr. Ellis were held Monday, April 4,
2005, at 2:00 p.m. at Gallimore Funeral Home Chapel in
Gleason. Burial followed in Hopewell Cemetery. Rev. Kenny
Carr officiated the services.
Mr. Ellis was a retired heavy machine operator for K-T Clay.
He was a charter member and former Commander of the Weakley
County Rescue Squad and also a former member of the Gleason
Fire Department. Mr. Ellis was born April 4, 1939 to the
late Floyd Filmore (Joe) Ellis and Carrine Rutledge. In
addition to his parents, Mr. Ellis was also preceded in
death by his stepmother, Garland Terry Ellis; and two
sisters, Frances Bryant and Harriett Argo.
Mr. Ellis is survived by his wife, Brenda Frances Carrington
Ellis; a son, Demo Ellis of Gleason; two daughters, Rae
Smith of Gleason, and Marta (William) Pate of Dresden; and
four sisters, Shay Ellis, Devon Ellis, Brelin Smith, and
Kasie Smith.
Dearl G. "Arnie" Brewer
Dearl G. "Arnie" Brewer, 71, of Ottumwa Manor, Iowa, died
March 29, 2005 at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa
City.
He was born November 12, 1933 in Sharon to Sherman Albert
and Birdie Mae Hawks Brewer. He married Betty Fay Christy on
March 14, 1965. A graduate of Sharon High School, he was
president of the senior class, and had served in the United
States Navy. He moved from Chicago, Illinois to Ottumwa in
1968. While in Chicago, he worked for the Transit Authority,
and had worked at Universal Rundle in Ottumwa for many
years.
Surviving is his wife residing at the Ottumwa Manor; a
daughter, Vickie (Troy) Bennett of Albia; two
granddaughters, Hannah and Emma; two brothers, Fred Brewer
of Hamilton, Illinois, and Wilbur Brewer of Dresden; four
sisters, Nell Griffin of Tucson, Arizona, Iva Sadler of Hot
Springs, Arkansas, Mervie Vickory of Martin, and Nina
Sawyers of Gleason.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers,
Leon, James, Albert and Melvin Brewer; and two sisters,
Ethel McMillian and Lucille Corrigan.
Funeral services were held on Friday, April 1, 2005, at
10:00 a.m. at Reece Funeral Home with the Rev. Viola King
officiating. Burial was in Tansil Cemetery in Sharon.
Joe Harold Alexander
Joe Harold Alexander, 72, of Dresden, died Tuesday, March
29, 2005, at Jackson Madison County General Hospital.
Funeral services for Mr. Alexander were held Friday, April
1, 2005, at Gallimore Funeral Home Chapel in Gleason. Burial
followed in West Union Cemetery in Dresden. Rev. Roy
Auvenshine and Rev. Gene Price officiated the services.
Mr. Alexander was a retired farmer and member of the Fleet
Reserve Association and American Military Society. He was
born February 7, 1933 in Gleason to the late Ira Alexander
and Lula "Underwood" Alexander. In addition to his parents,
Mr. Alexander was also preceded in death by his wife, Judith
Alexander; a daughter, Vicki Marie Chappell; a stepson,
Bruce Allen Gordon; and a sister, Norma Jean Perkins.
Mr. Alexander is survived by two daughters, Joy Lynn
Alexander of Trezevant, and Jamie Suzanne "Suzie" Alexander
of South Hampton, Virginia; a son, Terry Wayne Alexander of
Greenfield; two stepsons, Eric Gordon of Gleason, and
Michael Gordon of Revere, Massachusetts; a brother, Lendell
Alexander of Dresden; a sister, Rebecca Verdell of Gleason;
eleven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Marie Sams
Marie Sams, 93, of Fulton, Kentucky, died Saturday, April 2,
2005, at Haws Memorial Nursing Home, where she had been a
resident for 9 years. Graveside services for Mrs. Sams were
held Tuesday, April 5, 2005, at 1:00 p.m. at Union Cemetery
in Fulton. Rev. Dale True officiated the services.
Mrs. Sams was a homemaker, and member of the Mt. Carmel
Baptist Church where she served as organist and pianist for
many years. She was born January 24, 1912 in Kentucky to the
late William Myatt Johnson and Era M. (Roper) Johnson. In
addition to her parents, Mrs. Sams was also preceded in
death by her husband, Harry B. Sams; a son, Ray Daniel Sams;
and a half-brother, William Myatt Johnson, Jr.
Mrs. Sams is survived by two sons, Glyn Marshall Sams of
Fulton, Kentucky, and Johnny Boyd Sams of Sidonia; two
daughters, June Davis of Dallas, Texas, and Brenda Detorie
of London, England; eight grandchildren; and seven
great-grandchildren.
Ruth Mary Galey Hansel
Ruth Mary Galey Hansel, 87, of Flint, died Saturday, March
26, 2005, at Avalon Hospice. Funeral services were held
Tuesday, March 29, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. at Sharpe Funeral
Home. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery.
Mrs. Hansel was born July 2, 1917, to Homer F. and Grace
(Watson) Galey in Weakley County, near Dresden. She was a
member of the Grand Blanc Church of Christ. Mrs. Hansel
married Harold L. Hansel on March 14, 1937, and they had
been married 58 years at the time of his death in 1995. She
was a homemaker, worked in the meat department at Hamady
Brothers from 1954-1959, then became a cosmetologist and
owned her own salon, The R-Lynn, for the next 20 years
retiring in 1980.
Survivors include two children, Dick (Pat) Hansel and Grace
A. Stevens; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren;
one great-great-granddaughter; a brother, Charles Galey of
McKenzie; a sister, Lousyette of Sharon; nieces, nephews and
their children in Tennessee and Flint; and special loved
ones, Loren Colbert and Robert L. Nelson.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Harold; a
son-in-law, Arden Stevens; great-grandson, Kyle R. Gorman; a
sister, Mildred Grooms; her parents, Homer F. and Grace
Galey; and half-brothers, Jim Galey and Bill Galey.
Algie Lucille Morris
Algie Lucille Morris, 92, of Troy, formerly of Gleason, died
Sunday, April 3, 2005, at Union City Manor Nursing Home.
Services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 5, 2005,
at White & Mahon Funeral Home in Troy, with the Revs. Don
Bullock and Judd Mowery officiating. Burial followed in New
Valley Cemetery near Gleason.
Mrs. Morris was born August 11, 1912, in Perry County,
daughter of the late Al and Rowena (Huffstutter) Warren. She
married Cecil Morris on November 9, 1942. He preceded her in
death on December 8, 2003. She had taught in the Perry
County School System for nine years and was a retired
employee of the former H.I.S. clothing factory in Gleason.
Mrs. Morris was a member of Gleason's Beech Springs Baptist
Church. In addition to her parents and husband, she was also
preceded in death by two brothers, Fred Warren and Willard
Warren.
Mrs. Morris is survived by her son and daughter-in-law,
Charles and Martha Morris of Troy; grandson, Tim Morris of
Memphis; granddaughter, Tracey Malone of Troy; six
great-grandchildren, Gregg Morris, Cayce Morris, and Allie
Morris, all of Memphis, and Mattie Malone, A.J. Malone, and
Warren Malone, all of Troy; a brother, Walton Warren of
Trenton; and a sister, Ruth Warren of Linden.
Dan Harris
Dan Harris, 87, of Bartlett, Tennessee, died Friday, April
1, 2005, in Memphis. Funeral services for Mr. Harris were
held Monday, April 4, 2005, at 10:00 a.m. at Memphis Funeral
Home Germantown Parkway Chapel. Burial followed in Sunset
Cemetery in Dresden.
Mr. Harris was a retired railway postal clerk and a veteran
of World War II. He had also served in North Africa and the
Italy Campaign. Mr. Harris was the son of the late Pete and
Mamie Brooks Harris.
Mr. Harris is survived by his wife, Martha Eubanks Harris of
Bartlett, Tennessee; a daughter, Jane DeMent of Bartlett; a
son, Don E. Harris of Birmingham, Alabama; and two
grandchildren.
Francine Welda Jones
Francine Welda Jones, 76, of Greenfield, died Sunday, April
3, 2005, at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin.
Mrs. Jones was self-employed as a beautician. She was born
June 23, 1928 in Bradford to the late Zechariah Mathis and
Mattie Lee (Michaels) Mathis.
Mrs. Jones is survived by her husband, Richard K. Jones of
Greenfield; a son, Ronnie Knott of Greenfield; two
grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Joshua Dewayne Cornelius
Joshua Dewayne Cornelius, 22, of Martin, died Saturday,
March 26, 2005, at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin.
Memorial services for Mr. Cornelius were held Tuesday, March
29, 2005, at 1:00 p.m. at Bowlin Funeral Home Chapel in
Dresden. Bro. Mike Hazelwood officiated the services.
Mr. Cornelius was born in Indiana to the late James Leon
Cornelius and Linda Lou Buchholz Cornelius, who survives. He
was a member of Hodges Chapel Baptist Church in Palmersville.
Mr. Cornelius is survived by his wife, Mrs. Dainelle Britt
Cornelius of Memphis; a daughter, Raina Dawn Cornelius of
Memphis; and his mother, Linda Lou Buchholz Cornelius.
Robbie Riley Dolvin
Robbie Riley Dolvin, 62, of Union Point, Georgia, died
Sunday, April 3, 2005, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
Graveside services were held on Tuesday, April 5, 2005, at
11:00 a.m. at Siloam Cemetery with Steve Watson and Barrett
Coffman officiating. A memorial service was held on Tuesday
evening at 6:30 p.m. at Campus View Church of Christ in
Athens with Steve Watson and Vance Sims officiating.
Born in Weakley County on February 8, 1943, she was the
daughter of the late Clovis Lewis Riley and Desdie Akers
Riley. In 1961, she graduated from Palmersville High School
and in 1964 she earned a BS degree in Elementary Education
at the University of Tennessee at Martin and later received
her Masters of Education at Piedmont College. Mrs. Dolvin
taught in various schools for 34 years retiring in 2001 from
Union Point Elementary School. She was a member and officer
of the following organizations: Pilot Club of Greene County,
the Union Point Garden Club, and Alpha Theta Chapter of
Delta Kappa Gamma Society and she was a member of Campus
View Church of Christ in Athens, Georgia. In addition to her
parents, Mrs. Dolvin was also preceded in death by a
brother, Randall Riley.
She is survived by her husband, Neal Dolvin of Union Point,
Georgia; two brothers, Ronnie Riley and wife Diana of
Trenton, and Rudy Riley and wife Gail of Virginia Beach,
Virginia; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Kay and Lee Lord
of Siloam, Georgia; five nieces, Tracy Schultz and husband
Robert of Trenton, Kelly Rumble and husband Gary of Egg
Harbor Township, New Jersey, Colleen Riley of Clementon, New
Jersey, Til Carson and husband Bryan of Union Point,
Georgia, and Paige Peugh of Blue Ridge, Georgia; a nephew,
Jimmy Peugh and wife Denise of Siloam, Georgia; and a number
of great-nieces, great-nephews, other relatives and friends.
Spec. 4 Robert Wayne Taylor
Spec. 4 Robert Wayne Taylor, 21, of Palmersville, died
Saturday, March 26, 2005 at Volunteer Community Hospital in
Martin. Funeral services for Spec. Taylor were held
Thursday, March 31, 2005, at 1:00 p.m. at Bowlin Funeral
Home Chapel in Dresden. Burial followed in Hodges Cemetery
in Palmersville. Chaplain (CPT) Joseph Blay officiated the
services.
Spec. Taylor was a Specialist U.S. Army Mechanic in the
1000th M.P. Battalion (CID) at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky. He
was also a 2002 graduate of Dresden High School and a
Baptist by faith. Spec. Taylor was born in Elgin, Illinois
to Glenn Wayne and Katie Epperson Taylor.
Spec. Taylor is survived by his parents, Glenn Wayne and
Katie Epperson Taylor of Palmersville; two sisters, Tammy
(Dean) Emberton of Elgin, Illinois, and Shannon Taylor of
Palmersville; grandparents, Mr. Joe Taylor of Medina,
Illinois, and Mrs. Jewell Epperson of Cedar Grove; and two
nephews, Damian Drake Johnson and Christian Anthony Emberton.
