Beatrice Gilliam
Beatrice Gilliam, 81, of Dresden, died Wednesday, February
16, 2005, at Weakley County Nursing Home in Dresden. Funeral
services for Mrs. Gilliam were held Friday, February 18,
2005, at 2:00 p.m. at Bowlin Funeral Home Chapel in Dresden.
Burial followed in West Union Cemetery in Dresden. Bro.
Terry Griffin officiated the services.
Mrs. Gilliam was a retired Nurses Aid at the Weakley County
Nursing Home and a member of West Union Baptist Church in
Dresden. She was born in Decatur County to the late J.C. and
Ada Harris Boyd. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Gilliam
was also preceded in death by her husband, Fred Watson
Gilliam; and a son, Larry Gilliam.
Mrs. Gilliam is survived by five daughters, Freida Mullins
of Humboldt, Joyce Hensley of Dresden, Wanda Lamon of
Blytheville, Arkansas, Debbie Buck of Dresden, and Betty
Anderson of Blytheville, Arkansas; two sons, Randy Gilliam
of Blytheville, Arkansas, and Charles Gilliam of
Blytheville, Arkansas; a sister, Bonnie Tatum of Dresden;
twenty-five grandchildren; and thirty-eight
great-grandchildren.
GW "Totts" Cooper
GW "Totts" Cooper, 95, of Sharon, died Wednesday, February
23, 2005. Funeral services for Mr. Cooper were held Sunday,
February 27, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. at Sidonia Baptist Church.
Burial followed in Tansil Cemetery in Sharon. Rev. Barry
Capps and Mike Strachan officiated the services.
Mr. Cooper was a member of Sidonia Baptist Church. He was
born February 22, 1910 in Weakley County to the late Gentry
Cooper and Jette Johnson. In addition to his parents, Mr.
Cooper was also preceded in death by his wife, Iola Cooper;
a stepson, Alex Strachan; and two brothers, Willie Cooper
and Ray Cooper.
Mr. Cooper is survived by two daughters, Faye Higgs of
Martin, and Jean McNew of San Rafael, California; a
stepdaughter, Helen King of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; a
stepson, John Strachan of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; twelve
grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
James David Powell
James David Powell, 76, of Cordova, publisher of trade
magazines and woodworking and home building industries for
53 years, died Tuesday, January 18, 2005, at the University
of Arkansas Medical Center in Little Rock. Services were
held Monday, February 24, 2005, at Memphis Funeral Home
Germantown Parkway Chapel with burial in Memory Hill
Gardens.
He was a World War II veteran, a member of Bellevue Baptist
Church, and a graduate of the University of Tennessee. Mr.
Powell was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. James
Nathaniel Powell and Mrs. Cora Murchison Powell.
Mr. Powell, the husband of Joyce Powell, also leaves a
daughter, Janet Wolford of Newport News, Virginia; two sons,
Michael Powell of Canton, Georgia, and Jim Powell Jr. of
Chattanooga; a sister, Dorothy Powell of Memphis; a brother,
Leon Powell of Memphis; and six grandchildren.
Jessie Faye Guerra
Jessie Faye Guerra, 66, of Gleason, died Wednesday, February
23, 2005, at her mother's home. Funeral services for Mrs.
Guerra were held Saturday, February 26, 2005, at 2:00 p.m.
at Gallimore Funeral Home Chapel in Gleason. Burial followed
in New Valley Cemetery. Rev. Mike Jeffers and Rev. Bob
Copeland officiated the services.
Mrs. Guerra was an Executive Assistant for Merical Vita-Pak.
She was preceded in death by her father, James Howard Long;
and her husband, Robert Guerra.
Mrs. Guerra is survived by a son, Darrell Guerra of
Plancentia, California; her mother, Lessie Virginia Sanders
Long of Gleason; a brother, Dr. James Thomas Long of Murray,
Kentucky; a sister, Joyce Marie Long Lofton of Antioch,
Tennessee; and one grandchild.
Martha Sue Roberts
Martha Sue Roberts, 78, of Sharon, died Saturday, February
26, 2005, at Weakley County Nursing Home in Dresden. Funeral
services for Mrs. Roberts were held Monday, February 28,
2005, at 2:00 p.m. at Sharon Church of Christ. Burial
followed in Tansil Cemetery. Larry Powers officiated the
services.
Mrs. Roberts was a dietician at Weakley County Nursing Home
and a member of the Sharon Church of Christ. She was born
December 18, 1926 in Weakley County to the late Walter Roy
Chappell and Mary Alice Huggins. In addition to her parents,
Mrs. Roberts was also preceded in death by her husband, Leon
Roberts; a daughter, Demetra Hankins; a sister, Joyce
Gallimore; and a brother, John Chappell.
Mrs. Roberts is survived by a daughter, Helen Canada of
Sharon; two sisters, Peggy Vickers of Sharon, and Deloris
Lowe of Fulton, Kentucky; two brothers, Basil Chappell of
Dresden, and Jerry Chappell of Santa Rosa, New Mexico; seven
grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Mary Louise Triplett
Mary Louise Triplett, 57, of Palmersville, died Tuesday,
February 22, 2005, at Baptist Memorial Hospital East in
Memphis. Funeral services for Mrs. Triplett were held
Saturday, February 26, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. at Bowlin Funeral
Home in Dresden. Burial followed in Palmersville Cemetery.
Father Joe Paolozzi officiated the services.
Mrs. Triplett was a factory worker at Stoker Tobacco Co. and
was a Catholic by faith. She was born in Virginia to Agnes
Pike Beach and the late Joseph Beach. In addition to her
father, Mrs. Triplett was also preceded in death by her
husband, Mr. James Triplett.
Mrs. Triplett is survived by a daughter, Michelle (TJ) Rook
of Palmersville; her mother, Agnes Pike Beach of Arizona;
two brothers, John Beach of Florida, and Stan Beach of
Arizona; and two grandchildren, Kirsten and Kaitlyn Rook.
Docia J. "Dot" Gant
Docia J. "Dot" Gant, 89, of Lansing, Michigan, died February
23, 2005. Born July 14, 1915 in Greenfield, she was preceded
in death by her parents, Luther and Cappie Tola Jenkins; and
her husband, Daniel.
Mrs. Gant is survived by a stepson, Hildred; daughter,
Martha (Harland) Connell; daughter-in-law, Mary Sue; six
grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and three
great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held in Lansing, Michigan on February
26, 2005. Rev. Bob Nappier officiated the services.
Interment followed in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in
Lansing.
Hugh Roger Vickerstaff
Hugh Roger Vickerstaff, 87, of Martin, died Sunday, February
20, 2005, at his home. Funeral services for Mr. Vickerstaff
were held Friday, February 25, 2005, at 3:00 p.m. at Trinity
Presbyterian Church. Burial followed in Ida Grove Cemetery
in Ida Grove, Iowa. The Rev. Stephen Craft officiated the
services.
Mr. Vickerstaff was a retired hospital and medical school
administrator. He did his undergraduate work at Iowa State
University and his graduate work at Washington University.
Mr. Vickerstaff was born January 21, 1918 in Hawarden, South
Dakota to the late Sylvester George Vickerstaff and Ruth
Angle Vickerstaff.
Mr. Vickerstaff is survived by his wife, Mrs. Susan C.
Vickerstaff of Martin; a son, Paul Vickerstaff of
Birmingham, Alabama; a stepson, Michael Ritter of
Birmingham, Alabama; a daughter, Ann Snodgrass of Knoxville,
Tennessee; a stepdaughter, Cindy Moffett of Birmingham,
Alabama; three grandchildren, Katherine, Elizabeth, and
David Snodgrass; and two step-grandchildren, Spencer and
Lauren Moffett.
James Ralph Freeman
James Ralph Freeman, 75, of Martin, died Tuesday, February
22, 2005, at his home. Funeral services for Mr. Freeman were
held Friday, February 25, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. at Murphy
Funeral Home in Martin. Burial followed in East Side
Cemetery in Martin. Rev. Larry Kendrick officiated the
services.
Mr. Freeman was Business Manager for Beard Chevrolet for 28
years and a member of the First United Methodist Church. He
was also a member of the Martin Masonic Lodge No. 551, Royal
Arch Chapter, Council of Royal Masters, Commander of Knights
Templar, Order of High Priest, Order of Silver Trail, Past
Patron of the Eastern Star and a Shriner. Mr. Freeman was
born April 8, 1929 in Weakley County to the late Cleo
Freeman and Bethel Crosser Freeman. In addition to his
parents, Mr. Freeman was also preceded in death by his
wives, Joyce Kilgore Freeman and Doris Dearon Freeman.
Mr. Freeman is survived by his wife, Alma Perry Freeman of
Martin; a son, Howard Kruce of Ft. Walton Beach, Florida; a
daughter, Diane Freeman Kail of Gallatin, Tennessee; two
brothers, Jack Freeman of Martin, and Gerald Freeman of
Martin; a sister, Mary Lou Schrader of Troy; three
grandchildren, Courtney Kail, Cameron Kail, and Cammie Kruce;
and one great-grandchild, Austin Kail.
Juanita Wood
Juanita Wood, 79, of Elizabethton, died Monday, February 21,
2005, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. A memorial service for
Mrs. Wood was conducted at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 1,
2005, at Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church in Johnson
City with Rev. Lauri Jo Cranford officiating. A committal
service and inurnment were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday,
February 26, 2005, in the Wood Family Cemetery in Martin.
Murphy Funeral Home was in charge of the local arrangements.
Mrs. Wood was a native of Unicoi County and former resident
of Johnson City. She had lived in Elizabethton for the past
20 years. She was the daughter of the late Blake and Elsie
Scharfstein Head. Mrs. Wood was a member of the Munsey
Memorial United Methodist Church in Johnson City and a
retired school teacher. She was a graduate of East Tennessee
State University. She was a member of Carter County
Republican Women, Elizabethton Women's Club, American Legion
Auxiliary and Junior League of Johnson City. In addition to
her parents, Mrs. Wood was preceded in death by her husband,
Joseph L. Wood; and a daughter, Lee Dancy.
Mrs. Wood is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Joey
and Donna Wood of Johnson City; one granddaughter, Susan
Dancy Rogalski of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; and one
brother, Ben Scharfstein of Johnson City.
Mary Frances Casperson
Mary Frances Casperson, daughter of Fitshugh and Bertha Lee
Maddox, born in Gleason, August 25, 1923. She was better
known to her friends as Frances. She died on February 23,
2005.
She graduated from Gleason High School and Murray State
University, and taught school at Gleason High School in Home
Economics. She later moved to Freeburg, Illinois, where she
taught Home Economics at Freeburg Community High School. On
September 27, 1958 she married Elmer C. Casperson and they
lived in Belleville, Illinois until June of 1985, when they
moved back to Gleason.
She is survived by her husband, Elmer C. Casperson; a
stepson, Tom J. Casperson, M.D.; four grandchildren, Jenifer
Kalmes, Tom Casperson, Jr., Amy Casperson, and Charles
Casperson, all living in Minnesota; and six
great-grandchildren, Matthew Kalmes, Hannah Kalmes, Jane
Kalmes, Anna Casperson, Sarah Casperson, and Maxwell
Casperson.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Gleason.
Nancy Graves Vermillion
Nancy Graves Vermillion, 59, of Greenfield, died Tuesday,
February 22, 2005, at her home. Funeral services for Mrs.
Vermillion were held Thursday, February 24, 2005, at
Williams Funeral Home in Greenfield. Burial followed in
Morris Cemetery in Greenfield. Roy Auvenshine and Ryan Potts
officiated the services.
Mrs. Vermillion was a housewife and attended Bethlehem
Baptist Church in Greenfield. She was born June 12, 1945 in
Greenfield.
Mrs. Vermillion is survived by two sons, Billy Graves of
Greenfield, and Robert Graves of Greenfield; four sisters,
Ivie Jones of Greenfield, Mary Helen Featherston of
Greenfield, Elsie French of Greenfield, and Virginia
Hedgepath; and four grandchildren.
