Two killed in single-vehicle
crash |
A weekend automobile accident claimed the lives of two
Weakley County men who were involved in a single-vehicle
crash.
According to a report by Trooper Andy Forsythe of the
Tennessee Highway Patrol, the fatal accident took place at
approximately 6:05 a.m. Saturday. Trooper Forsythe states
that 22-year-old Joshua D. Cornelius of 116 Carter Street in
Martin was driving north on State Route 190 in a 1999 Ford
Taurus at a high rate of speed, and the vehicle began to
slide sideways in a curve located about four miles south of
Palmersville. The car left the roadway and became airborne
before crashing into a tree.
Both Cornelius and his passenger, Robert W. Taylor, 21, of
Hwy. 190 in Palmersville, died at the scene. Taylor, who was
a specialist fourth class on leave from the United States
Army, was stationed in Fort Campbell, Kentucky as a member
of the 101st Airborne Division. Taylor, a Dresden High
School graduate, had just returned home to Tennessee, after
serving two years of active duty in Iraq.
Neither man was wearing a seat belt at the time of the
accident, but due to the high rate of speed, the
investigating officer noted that it probably would have made
little difference.
Trooper Forsythe was assisted in working the accident by
Weakley County Sheriff's deputies; EMS personnel;
Palmersville Fire Department, and the Weakley County Rescue
Squad, which was called in to extricate the victims.

A Weakley County woman shot her husband during a domestic
dispute last week, which resulted in both of them being
arrested.
Joy Seckler, 59, was arrested and charged with aggravated
domestic assault, while her husband, Jack Seckler, 61, was
arrested and charged with domestic assault, after Weakley
County Sheriff's deputies responded to a call at their Will
Young Road residence Thursday evening.
When deputies arrived at the scene, they found Jack Seckler
suffering from a gunshot wound to his hand from a 9 mm
pistol. Based on statements and evidence found at the scene,
officers state that Mrs. Seckler got the pistol and fired a
round into the floor of her living room during a verbal
confrontation with her husband. When Mr. Seckler attempted
to get the gun away from her, she fired a second shot,
hitting Mr. Seckler in the hand.

Local Guardsmen return from
active duty in Iraq |
By David Fisher

Several Weakley County citizens, who are members of the
Tennessee Army National Guard, recently arrived back in the
United States after serving a one-year tour of active duty
in Iraq.
Last Monday, the men and women of the 1171st Transportation
Company from Tiptonville and Millington went through several
stations, which were set up throughout the Dyersburg
National Guard Armory to assist members of the unit with the
transition back to civilian life.
These local soldiers, dressed smartly in their tan-and-brown
uniforms of U.S. soldiers from the Middle East war zone,
smiled and joked with one another as they waited with stacks
of papers in their hands to be out-processed. Now that their
tour of duty in Iraq was at an end, they were receiving
medical checkups, undergoing counseling and signing the
reams of required paperwork.
The unit, based in Tiptonville, left on January 3, 2004 for
Fort Stewart, Georgia and shipped out to the Middle East on
March 18, 2004. They have been stationed at Camp Anaconda
north of Baghdad for the past year. During this time, the
1171st convoys have received enemy fire on numerous
occasions.
The soldiers have communicated with their families through
emails and phone calls. They also received two weeks R&R for
a visit home with their families during their deployment.
